have released thought-provoking techno and minimal for over seven years, and finally we see the Swedes’ drop their debut artist album ‘Animals’.
But was it worth the wait?
Quite frankly, yes. ‘Animals’ is one of the best electronic music LPs we’ve heard all year, a multi-faceted album that offers dancefloor satisfaction and conceptual electronica all at once.
Split into two parts (‘Dance’ and ‘Ambient’), Minilogue have shrewdly realized that their music works well beyond the club bubble without abandoning their dancing shoes altogether (which many electronic music producers do when dropping a full-length studio album).
Minilogue have always been about the psychedelic, hypnotic moments found in the spaces in between, and both parts of their album offer psychedelic hypnotism.
On the ‘Dance’ side, be sure to check out ‘Hitchhiker’s Choice’, which is jazzy and uptempo, and ‘Jamaica’ which loops along at a good pace.
Also, ‘33000 Honeybees’ and ‘We All’ will peak the curiosity of tech house fans.
Whilst the ‘Dance’ part of the album is suitably warm, groovy techno, the ‘Ambient’ side to ‘Animals’ shows Minilogue are keen to take their sound in a new direction - don’t be surprised if they start doing more ambient live sets in the coming months.
Overall, ‘Animals’ maintains Minilogue’s current status as masters of dark techno, and brings forth a new, more complete vision of electronic psychedelia.
