A Mutual Antipathy - Scuba

A Mutual Antipathy

Scuba [Hotflush]

#15 in this month's The 20

Considering the amount of depth present throughout ‘A Mutual Antipathy’, the artist name of Scuba is highly appropriate.

Upon listening to the most recent single ‘Tell Her’, all indicators seemed to point to something of an unusually textured soundtrack.

While this soundtrack feel does permeate the album, the result is more fully an experiment in the depth charge effect.

Cuts such as ‘Disorder’, ‘The Upside’ and ‘Twitch’ are the bottom feeders of Scuba’s world, gliding effortlessly into the colder regions of the ocean floor.

‘Stolen’ explores the treasured reefs, while ‘Poppies’ reminds us that even sharks tread some of the most beautifully clear and accessible waters.

The album’s closer, ‘Suck’, isn’t nearly as menacing as it sounds, actually adding a ray of light to the situation.

It’s reminiscent of the album’s optimistic opener, ‘Systematic Decline’, and we are reminded now to recall that an adventure awaited us from the beginning, and it’s a feeling that does not leave us disappointed.
