Pinch [Punch Drunk ]

#16 in this month's The 20

Dubstep label Punch Drunk releases the latest by rising Bristol star Pinch to true underground form.

But it’s the release’s b-side, ‘136 Trek’, that steals the show.

While ‘Dr. Carlson’ is such a slow-builder as to be a bit on the flat side, ‘136 Trek’ and its depth of atmosphere takes the release to the next level.

Showing a clear affinity for the classic dancehall and dub scene, Pinch isn’t afraid to get deep and tripped out in a way that’s authentic and true to its influences.

In fact, ‘136 Trek’ gets downright spooky, but in a way that Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry from the 1970s would approve.

Full of twists and turns and dark paths, it’s this b-side that highlights the next wave of dub, known today as dubstep.
