The Transitory State

Stefan Goldmann [Macro Recordings]

#01 in this month's The 20

Stefan Goldmann [a] has the innate ability to push the sonic envelope further than the vast majority of his contemporaries.

When his ideas and themes are gathered and presented in album format this is a point that becomes all the more apparent.

Shedding the Past

Shed [Ostgut Ton]

#02 in this month's The 20

When describing ‘Shedding the Past’ it’s difficult not to eulogise over the album’s significance in a shift back towards the raw techno sound on which the genre was built.

Along with Shed [a], the movements of fellow Berghain cohorts Marcel Dettmann [a] and Ben Klock [a] etc., have been well documented so all that’s really necessary to report is the sheer brilliance of this album.

Freaky Bitches Remixes (Second Installment) (Clatterbox Remix)

Andrea Parker feat. DJ Assault [To...

#03 in this month's The 20

For those who most readily associate the word ‘electro’ with Steve Angello and Deadmau5, take note: this is electro.

Andrea Parker [a] & DJ Assault’s ‘Freaky Bitches’ comes in for a second wave of remix treatments through Touchin’ Bass with the top honours this time going to UK lo-fi producer Clatterbox [a]

Sebo K [Mobilee]

#04 in this month's The 20

Sebo K’s output over the past two years has marked out a distinct musical territory in which he consistently thrives.

The nod continually appears to go towards Chicago, albeit in a less overt manner than his Berlin contemporary, Prosumer.

#05 in this month's The 20

Philip Bader [a] & Sascha Braemer [a] team up here on the multifaceted ‘Mamba Drums EP’ for the Get Physical sub-label Kindisch [l]

All three offerings promote differing moods and textures with the only noticeable common thread being an indulgent use of compression.

Stone EP (Bart Skils & Anton Pieete Remix)

#06 in this month's The 20

Along with 2001 and One, Patrice Baumel and Lauhaus, Bart Skils [a] & Anton Pieete [a] have been part of the recent Dutch techno movement that has injected a healthy dose of Detroit-influenced funk into the European scene.

Their remix of ‘Crabsticks’, lifted from Mark Broom [a] & Mihalis Safras ‘Stone EP’ is a perfect case in point.

Next of Kin, Mark II

Surkin [Institubes]

#07 in this month's The 20

‘Next of Kin, Mark II’ by French producer Surkin [a] is unashamedly funky house, and commercial too, but unlike the drivel that plagues Hed Kandi compilations, this is pure hedonistic fun.

‘Chrome Knight’, which features Chromeo, has achieved instant anthem status already. It’ll probably be one of the biggest house records of the winter, if Ministry Of Sound get their dirty mits on it.

Kenny Larkin [Planet E Communicatio...

#08 in this month's The 20

The title of Kenny Larkin’s new LP would almost serve to suggest it’s an album that comprises of a great deal more than your average techno record.

This would indeed be true but would not extend nearly far enough to convey the length and breadth of the sonic arsenal on offer here.

Aragami Style

King Cannibal [Ninja Tune]

#09 in this month's The 20

Now this is a hard one. Is King Cannibal [a] ‘Aragami Style’ dubstep or drum & bass?

Unfortunately for classification junkies, it’s both. Which makes things interesting for both camps.

Pigstyle

Aardvarck [Kindred Spirits]

#10 in this month's The 20

Dutch label behemouth Rush Hour [l] release the third long-player from veteran producer Aardvarck [a].

‘Pigstyle’ finds Aardvarck in a far dubbier mood than on his 2006 Rush Hour venture ‘Cult Copy’.

Samybo [Room 613]

#11 in this month's The 20

This appears to be a debut release from Samybo [a], which makes the decision to enlist currently high-flying Greek producer Lemos [a] for remix duties all the more shrewd.

His recent releases for 8 Bit [a], Cecille Numbers [l] and Be Chosen, notable by their wonderful depth and complex percussive overtones, have found favour with DJs from across the board.

Chemosphere EP (Headhunter remix)

Various Artists [Lost Souls]

#12 in this month's The 20

London’s Lost Souls [l] are the crew partly responsible for making disheveled Shoreditch techno heads party in the abandoned toilet otherwise known as Public Life.

Over the last six months or so, the toilet has become one of the best dance spots in the east end, and now the boys take a big step with the launch of their own record label, Lost Souls.

Straight out of the gates is a release from German twosome Misc [a] and a remix from Bristol king Headhunter [a]

Neues Testament

Roman IV [Playhouse ]

#13 in this month's The 20

The last time Roman Flügel donned his Roman IV [a] cap for Playhouse was back in 1995 on ‘Altes Testament’.

On ‘Neues Testament’ the line can easily be traced from its predecessor; 12 years down the line, wriggly funk still seems to resonate with Flügel.

Clarion Call

The Third Man [AI Records]

#14 in this month's The 20

Harking back to the days of acid house and rave, The Third Man [a] displays a strong sense of musical history with his new album ‘Clarion Call’ on Ai Records [l].

If you’re into old Detroit techno, acid breaks and electro funk, this LP is for you.

Double Night Time

Morgan Geist [Environ]

#16 in this month's The 20

It has been 10 years since Metro Area’s Morgan Geist released his solo album ‘The Driving Memoirs’, and finally he returns with a fabulously funky electro tech LP ‘Double Night Time’.

He recently admitted that he’s basically over electronic music but are we over his productions? Quite frankly, no.

Enigma (Calibre Remix)

Break [Quarantine Recordings]

Blackbelt Andersen [Full Pupp]

#19 in this month's The 20

Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp [l] records releases another earth-shattering slice of disco funk, this time from Daniel Tjus Andersen aka Blackbelt Andersen.

Anyone up for 12 minutes and 22 seconds of clever cosmic disco? Yep, we are too. Listen to it in the player after the flip.

Frankfurt-based jazzy deep house outfit Motorcitysoul [a] return with a gorgeous and blissful house track on Simple Records.
