DJ Sodeyama [No:More Rec]

#01 in this month's The 20

Something of a DJ’ing veteran in his native Japan, DJ Sodeyama has been plying his trade since as early as 1993.

This richly populated EP draws mainly upon source material from Sodeyama’s wonderful ‘Dual’ LP which dropped earlier this year, also through No:More Rec.

The Pace

7027 [7027 Layered Files]

#02 in this month's The 20

Basic Channel eh? Where would we be without them?

The recent upsurge in the dub techno genre they single-handedly created during the 1990s has spread rapidly across Europe with myriad producers absorbing (unsuccessfully or otherwise) their tried and tested blueprint.

Federgewicht EP (Oslo Remix)

Ost & Kjex and Solomun [Diynamic]

#03 in this month's The 20

Vocals as distinct as the ones featured on the ‘Federgewicht EP’ from Norwegians Ost & Kjex and Diynamic boss Solomun can easily make or break a track.

However in the case of ‘Federgewicht’ a successful marriage between quirky vocals and arpeggiated synths work in a way none too dissimilar to last years ‘Honeymoon’s Over’ by Snax.

Format:B [Highgrade Records]

#04 in this month's The 20

Minimal has never been a genre that lends itself too successfully to the LP format, however Berliners Format:B go someway to bucking the trend with an album that succeeds by never taking it’s eye off the dancefloor.

Evidently Format:B [a] did not bother trying to deviate into uncharted genres for the sake of the traditional album format and instead they focused solely on what they excel at.

Soft Sell (Thomas Fehlmann)

Broken/Dealer [Spectral Sound]

#05 in this month's The 20

Broker/Dealer wear their 80’s influences overtly on their sleeve on the very retro but very different ‘Soft Sell EP’ on Spectral Sound.

Placing their flag in the ground somewhere between the decade’s synth pop sensibilities and the more melodic end of the techno spectrum, Broker Dealer conjure up a well rounded pair in the form of ‘Soft Sell’ and ‘Save It For Later’.

Technique

Motorcitysoul [Simple Records]

#06 in this month's The 20

With the appetite for deep house among the electronic community seemingly insatiable at the moment, ‘Technique’, the debut LP from Motorcitysoul [a], could hardly have arrived at a better time.

Frankfurt duo Matthias Vogt and Christian Rindermann (C-Rock) have been carefully crafting their sound since 2003 but appear to have reached a definitive high point with this soul-encrusted album.

Red Shift EP

Speedy J [Electric Deluxe]

#07 in this month's The 20

Delivering his first single for over two years, Dutch techno pioneer Speedy J continues to break new ground with the ‘Red Shift EP’ for his own Electric Deluxe imprint.

Created using parts from his ‘Kreate’ sound library, this two-track release sees something of a change of pace from the veteran producer with the busy, industrial leanings of his hitherto work replaced with stripped-back, but no less menacing arrangements.

#09 in this month's The 20

The house revolution continues apace here with its boundless reach seemingly touching all corners of the dance music world.

It seems even the likes of Berlin label Resopal Schallware have been bitten in some way by the virulent house music bug sweeping the scene.

Weaving a resolutely dub flavour through its eight track duration, Scott Mont aka Deadbeat comes triumphantly to the fore with ‘Roots and Wire’.

DMX Krew [Kust Musik]

#13 in this month's The 20

Electro pop king Ed DMX had a successful run in the 1990s on Rephlex but in the last few years he’s been pretty quiet.

His new ‘Ionospheric Exploration’ EP signals a return to the frontlines of electro for him.

More Than Alot

Chase & Status [RAM Records ]

#14 in this month's The 20

Drum & bass has suffered a mass exodus of its most creative producers recently who have been attracted to the darker, more spatial landscape of dubstep.

Lack of innovation has further doused the flames of drum & bass’ once rampant fires, and 2008 will go down as one of the worst ever years for drum & bass LPs.

Through the genre’s ashes however, the new album from Chase & Status [a] ‘More Than Alot’ has emerged as a beacon of hope.

Dutch DJ and producer Shinedoe [a] has cemented her place in techno with a sound that straddles its three branches - minimal, tech house and straight up loops.

Quand Y En A Marre Y A Minibar

Cabanne [Minibar Music]
