The 20 featured reviews for July 2008

Cyclical

Ital Tek [Planet Mu]

#01 in this month's The 20

Whilst dubstep’s roots stem musically from the gritty, garage-tinted streets of southeast London, Ital Tek’s new album ‘Cyclical’ proves that the genre can be used as an explorative space for sound deconstruction and construction, just like techno can.

With 11 tracks of computerized symphonies based around the disorientating rhythms of two step and broken beat, Ital Tek uses the space between the breaks to create a dark, wholly depressing look at life.

Vantage Isle Session

Deepchord [Echospace]

#02 in this month's The 20

Techno doesn’t get much deeper than Deepchord ‘Vantage Isle Session’, which remains firmly within the realms of sparse, uneventful techno.

There is much to be said, it seems, from not saying anything at all.

Infinity Is Now

Peverelist [Tectonic]

#03 in this month's The 20

Peverelist ‘Infinity Is Now’ is built around a complex arpegiated lead synth that flies graciously like a bird heading towards the sun.

The feeling that awaits it in the breakdown is warm, exotic and dramatic, yet monotonous.

Sweet & Sour

Sety [Circus Company]

#04 in this month's The 20

Beatportal’s Zack Rico recently bigged up Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts Remix of Sety’s ‘Mogane’ in his DJ Gossip blog, but all four tracks on ‘Sweet & Sour’ warrant dancefloor attention.

The Main Mix of ‘Fogu Puro’ is a gorgeous blend of live instruments and bongos that builds dramatically towards a sexy female solo in the breakdown.

Mora EP

Leonid [Statik Entertainment]

#05 in this month's The 20

Leonid’s bass-heavy techno on ‘Mora’ leans towards the dark side, but the DJ-friendly intro and soft break gives the track a good warm-up potential.

Devoid of an obvious build-up, ‘Mora’ trickles along at an atmosphere-setting pace that will give empty floors an enticing feeling.

Dear Painter, Paint Me

Heartthrob [Minus]

#06 in this month's The 20

Heartthrob’s jovial take on minimal techno is unique because it’s much more than just bleeps and bass: it’s inherently groovy.

His long awaited debut LP ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me’ is a great example of how at the heart of Heartthrob’s music is a cheeky, ass-shaking monkey waiting to come out.

Journey To The Sun (Dennis Ferrer Remixes)

The Sunburst Band [Z Records]

#07 in this month's The 20

Beatportal is very aware that Dennis Ferrer gets more than his fair share of mentions in our humble blog posts, and believe us, we try our hardest not write about Mr. Ferrer, but the truth is the US house producer keeps releasing dancefloor rocking tracks that demand our attention.

With his remixes of ‘Journey To The Sun’, Dennis Ferrer displays his unflinching ability to create driving house music that does a wonderful job of bridging the divide between tech house and deep house.

Jupiter Jive

Mark Henning [Soma Recordings]

#08 in this month's The 20

Mark Henning jacked in his city job in London for a life in electronic music, and ‘Jupiter Jive’ represents his first major work and therefore his first big risk.

But Scotland’s Soma Recordings doesn’t often roll the dice, and with ‘Jupiter Jive’ they have an album that should sell all by itself.

Doubledub EP

Christian Burkhardt [Raum…Musik]...

#09 in this month's The 20

We recently named Christian Burkhardt ‘Doubledub’ a Top Track on Beatportal, and rightly so; it’s one of the best vocal tech house tracks of 2008 so far.

The rhythmic female vocal gives the track serious staying power, and on the top of Burkhardt’s warbling bass it’ll sound superb on any club system.

Los Angeles

Flying Lotus [Warp]

#10 in this month's The 20

From the 55-second introductory track ‘Auntie’s Harp’, Flying Lotus’ new album ‘Los Angeles’ is impressively mosaic.

By combining warm, organic tones with live instruments, gorgeous blissful vocals, and blitzkrieg glitchy breakbeat Flying Lotus have managed to craft an enticing album of pop-centric electronica that isn’t afraid of warm melodies.

‘L’Aurora’ (Russ Gabriel’s Old School Remix)

Poppcke, Alex Niggemann [Moonpool]

#11 in this month's The 20

If you’re still searching for that essential summer vibes track look no further than the Russ Gabriel Old School Remix of Poppcke and Alex Niggemann ‘L’Aurora’.

The track combines warm inviting melodies with fresh bongos and synth-heavy techno and it’s glorious.

The Standoffish Cat

Mrs. Jynx [Planet Mu]

#12 in this month's The 20

Manchester’s Mrs. Jynx is influenced by Uziq, Frog Pocket and Aphex Twin and on Hannah Davidson’s debut album ‘The Standoffish Cat’ her love for ambient techno shines through.

With 13 tracks of delicate melodic electronica built around harmonic layers and downtempo rhythms, the music is a blissful, inspiring listen.

Ellipsis/Eulogy

Chymera [Figure]

#13 in this month's The 20

I met Chymera recently at Barcelona’s Sonar, and he cut a dramatically different figure to the man I expected him to be from listening to his music.

All of Chymera’s tracks are profound, awe-inspiring melodic techno cuts that soar high above the Earth like eagles sent from heaven, and yet there he was, this young skinny and very polite chap from Ireland grinning from ear to ear.

Muting The Noise

Various Artists [Innervisions]

#14 in this month's The 20

Innervisions first compilation is an unexpected pleasure.

Label boss Dixon threw out the deep house manifesto and instead recruited his producer friends such as Tokyo Black Star, Henrik Schwarz and Ame to produce serene ambient soundscapes.

Bring Out The Imps

IMPS [Mule Electronic]

#15 in this month's The 20

Minilogue duo Markus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert have mastered the minimal techno form, so it’s very exciting to hear a new direction on their LP ‘Bring Out The Imps’, which is the result of a collaboration project with Australian jazz outfit Decoy.

By combining Decoy’s live jazz instruments with the repetitive undulations of Minilogue’s techno the foursome have managed to create an album of resolutely funky freeform music.

Proper Latin Usage

Giorgos Gatzigristos [Wolfskuil Rec...

#16 in this month's The 20

Suspense is a DJ’s most powerful weapon, and Giorgos Gatzigristos ‘Proper Latin Usage’ has bucketloads of it.

On the original, acid basslines and squelching synths crash into each other to create a mind-bending journey into the outer rhythms of techno whilst the Kevin Gorman remix of ‘Proper Latin Usage’ blips along like a timebomb.

Dark Times / Desperate Measures part 4

Bulletproof [Cyanide]

#17 in this month's The 20

Usually when people go traveling, they return home refreshed and with a positive outlook on life, but Jay Bulletproof has seemingly trudged back Down Under with a dark cloud above his head.

The Auckland-based drum & bass producer has been touring the world for the last year and his 2nd album ‘Dark Times / Desperate Measures’ is the result of that globetrotting.

Headphone Silence (Henrik Schwarz remix / Dixon edit / Ame approved / DF Noizy edit)

Ane Brun [Objektivity]

#18 in this month's The 20

There’s nothing but pure joy to be found on Henrk Schwarz and Dixon’s deep house remix/edit of Ane Brun’s delicate ‘Headphone Silence’.

The lyrics of the Norwegian vocalist sound like a cross between Bjork and her fellow countrywoman Annie, and coupled with Schwarz’ fascinating mix of live instrumentation and understated techno beats, the track is sublime; possibly the best deep house track of 2008.

Phonosutura

Andrea Sartori [Persona]

#19 in this month's The 20

Nu-jazz is the perfect way to describe Andrea Sartori ‘Phonosutura’, which is an exotic blend of tech house and jazz.

Like Laurent Garnier’s ‘The Man With The Red Face’, lead track ‘Phonosutura’ combines techno loops and driving basslines with improvisational jazzy moments.

Vabanque

Manuel Tur [Freerange]

#20 in this month's The 20

Manuel Tur is king of the deep, and ‘Vabanque’ is a warm and inspiring slice of deep house grooves.

With a sexy vocal hook, the track is more kicking than we’re used to hearing from Manuel Tur, and is quite the big room record.
