Watamu Beach (Moritz Von Oswald Rework)

Sebbo [Desolat]

#01 in this month's The 20

History has proven that you must be doing something extraordinary in order to get the attention of Basic Channel’s Moritz Von Oswald.

Only for a limited number of occasions — of which Carl Craig’s ‘The Climax’ Reshape stands out — has even Basic Channel given any remix treatment to fellow artists’ selections.

All Day All Night

Gideon [SINO]

#02 in this month's The 20

Sometimes the most innovative sounds come from off the radar.

In a flurry of output under various aliases, including Alexis Tyrel, Gideon Hommes, G. Hommes, to name a few, Gideon has been honing his sound to capture production as well as essence.

The latest release, ‘All Day All Night’ shows a producer that is indeed primed for the late-night club scene.

Secret Weapons Pt. 2 EP

Various Artists [Innervisions]

#03 in this month's The 20

‘Secret Weapons Pt. 2 EP’ is a curious compilation combining some of the newest cuts with the seasoned input of François K reinterpreting Nina Simone.

Undoubtedly, this left-field approach has something to do with the fact that Innervisions is a Berlin-based label set up by tastemakers Dixon and Amé.

To our grateful ears, it’s not a compilation that shouldn’t remain purely within the intellectual realm, as its sounds remain challenging and fresh.

Tell Her

Scuba [Hotflush Recordings]

#04 in this month's The 20

Relative newcomer Scuba (AKA Paul Rose) has managed to capture what artists who have been in it for years have been only hoping to accomplish.

In one fell swoop, ‘Tell Her’ is nearly epic is its soundtrack appeal, shooting straight up there with some of the most brilliant soundtrack composers and bearing appealing recent likeness to The Cinematic Orchestra’s version of ‘Man With A Movie Camera’.

Datassette

Datassette [Ai Records]

#05 in this month's The 20

Listening to Datassette’s self-titled album quickly spells out how it would make perfect sense that the one-man act would come to remix ‘Young Folks’ by Peter, Bjorn and John.

There’s a high savvy for pop sensibility throughout, all lying on an electronic bed.

Southbound / Pink Flamingos

MyMy [Ostgut Ton]

#06 in this month's The 20

MyMy’s understatedly harmonic music on ‘Southbound/Pink Flamingos’ sounds like it was recorded by an orchestra in a park during a particularly lazy Sunday afternoon.

The deep and warm sounds made by the trio of Lee Jones, Carsten Klemann and Nick Höppner has always been subtle but disquiet – an unnerving attention to the finer points gives their music a confusing shot between the dancefloor and home.

Era of Diversion

Evol Intent [Evol Intent]

#07 in this month's The 20

Whilst dubstep has stolen a few drum and bass heads through bass appeasement, Evol Intent are the brash Atlanta-based trio who provide a punk-inspired path of thrashing beats and balls-to-the-wall bass with their new LP ‘Era of Diversion’.

Evol Intent spit on subtlety and wee on softcore - the group consists of The Enemy (Ashley Jones), Knick (Nick Weiller), and Gigantor (Mike Diasio) - and if you’re a bit clueless at to what ‘hardstep’ actually is look no further than their new album.

Missp

Phil Kieran [Cocoon Recordings]

#08 in this month's The 20

Known recently for the work with his band Alloy Mental, the established Phil Kieran returns with a solo outing ‘Missp’, adding Cocoon Recordings to his roster of labels.

The cut lives a dual life in being driving yet only slightly beyond minimal at the exact same time, but it is never sparse.

BND2

Andomat 3000 [Four:Twenty Recording...

#09 in this month's The 20

Andomat 3000’s name may seem relatively new, and his work as DJ Mahatma may precede him, but ‘BND2’ is clearly a techy twist on the situation.

The Original of ‘BND2’ is a multi-layered odyssey closely resembling something coming out of the original French Touch camp, complete with horns.

Diary of An Afro Warrior

Benga [Tempa]

#10 in this month's The 20

Dubstep has received a significant amount of attention recently with everyone from mainstream newspapers to commercial radio stations, lifting a magnifying glass to the UK-centric underground breaks scene.

The problem with garnering that much attention is that the media can start to shape and affect the very scene it attempts to document, warping it into something far removed from the original, beautiful edifice that it once was.

Groundhog Day

Claude VonStroke and Christian Mart...

#11 in this month's The 20

Dirtybird label owner Claude VonStroke [pictured] teams up with one half of the Martin Brothers to make his return after a year’s hiatus from music production.

It’s quickly impressed that there must be some voodoo in that San Francisco water, because this teaming of VonStroke and Christian Martin seems to hit the mark straight on.

Put It On feat. Ernesto Remixes

Atjazz [Mantis Recordings]

#12 in this month's The 20

Atjazz’s ‘Put It On’ gets a lift with this triple tracker remix collection.

First to take a stab is the UK’s Atjazz himself, adding more of a house feel to the jazzy original, making it quite suitable for a dancefloor with international influence.

Demonstration Tape (1997–2007)

Solvent [Ghostly International]

#13 in this month's The 20

Borne out of a period of continued inactivity on Suction Records — the primary label home for Solvent — the time has come for an anthology.

The Toronto, Ontario-based artist also known as Jason Amm, after all, had been highly engaged with the label for quite some time along with fellow artist Lowfish, and after several other distractions, it was time to put the label to bed.

Play With Vannelli

Joe T Vannelli [Dream Beat]

#14 in this month's The 20

Seasoned veteran Joe T Vannelli has been on Italy’s radar for quite some time, and cuts like ‘Play With Vannelli’ give him wider presence on an international level.

Vannelli started out on radio as a DJ before moving into the clubs as a DJ.

Astronotes

Julien Parise [Missive Music]

#15 in this month's The 20

Julien Parise’s music is like a cross between Booka Shade and Cobblestone Jazz, and ‘Astronotes’ is a prime example of the fun, deep tech house he creates.

Beginning with a simplified minimal jazzy house intro punctuated by vocal snippets, ‘Astronotes’ soon moves into a groovy yet slow burning number fit for a late night session of star gazing.

Advanced Mechanics EP

Maetrik [Treibstoff]

#16 in this month's The 20

‘Advanced Mechanics EP’ sees Dallas, Texas resident born and bred in Cuba, Maetrik, return to Triebstoff, an early supporter of his work since 2001.

Three techno excursions are featured on the release, bordering closely to the sound of minimal.

Aria (Tiger Stripes Remix)

Lee Jones [Aus Music]

#17 in this month's The 20

If you buy one tech house record this month, make sure it’s the Tiger Stripes [pictured] remix of Lee Jones ‘Aria’ - it is simply brilliant.

Want more justification?

Well every major tech house DJ has been caning the record, which bridges the gap between minimal and house effortlessly.

Orange EP

Joseph Capriati [Loose Records]

#18 in this month's The 20

Italy has long been a bastion of house music, but techno has become a major force to be reckoned with thanks to homegrown Italian producers like Luca Bacchetti, Rino Cerrone, and Lucio Aquilina.

Add Joseph Capriati as another one to that mix.  With tight techno and funky minimal beats, his new ‘Orange’ EP is a DJ friendly slice of dancefloor focused techno.

Astral

The Regisford Harris Project [Objek...

#19 in this month's The 20

‘Astral’ is a Ricardo Villalobos-style house record.

By this I mean it’s clever, minimal and features much more than your usual boom tick and bass.

The arrangement is unusual, the sounds are a rag bag of violins, soaring pads and excited synths, and the producer displays an obvious lack of respect for the norm (which is a good thing).

It’s All About The Toe

Davide Squillace [Adagio]

#20 in this month's The 20

If Davide Squillace is good enough for the Circoloco crew, he’s good enough for Beatportal because if anything, those crazy Ibiza DC10 promoters know how to throw a party.

The club is the modern-day equivalent of the Hacienda, a culture-changing lone wolf, unlike any other dancefloor.
