BEATWIKI USER GUIDE

The Beatportal.com BeatWiki artist and label directories are a web-based, free content collaborative project. Beatportal editors, contributing bloggers and volunteers worldwide write contributions collaboratively. Anyone can contribute to BeatWiki; simply create an account with Beatport.com and log into Beatportal.

Every artist and every record label on Beatport has their own BeatWiki page on Beatportal at an easy to remember URL.

Artist wiki pages are at http://www.beatportal.com/artists/artist-name eg: http://www.beatportal.com/artists/richie-hawtin

Label wiki pages are at: http://www.beatportal.com/labels/label-name eg: http://www.beatportal.com/labels/get-physical-music

Layout of a BeatWiki page

On every BeatWiki page there is:

Add to My Favorites

At the top of a Beatwiki page, on the right-hand side of the middle section above the main image is an 'Add to My Favorites' button. Any logged in user can add favorites by clicking this button. To remove favorites, click 'Remove My Favorite'. To view your favorites, click 'My User Page'. You can view the favorites of other users by viewing their user profile.

Upload Photos/View Gallery/Report a Concern links

In the middle section of a Beatwiki page beneath the main picture is an 'Upload Photos' link. Click this to upload photos (GIF, JPG, PNG) directly to an artist/label gallery. Don't forget to include a caption. If you spot an inappropriate image in a gallery, click 'Report a Concern' to alert Beatportal's administrators. You can view an artist/label gallery by clicking the 'View Gallery' link.

Make main image

When viewing certain artist and label galleries you are able to choose which image should be displayed as the main image. Click the 'Make main image' link on a thumbnail image to make it the lead image of a Beatwiki page.

Beatport.com artist images

The Beatport.com database is synchronized with Beatwiki so artists that have their own landing page with an image on Beatport.com will have the same image appear as their lead image on their Beatwiki page. This image can only be changed by contacting your Beatport label manager.

Rate Artist/Rate Label

Directly below the main image is a rating system which allows logged in users to rate artists and record labels by clicking the headphone scale – one headphone should be given to artists/labels you don't like, and five headphones to artists and labels that you love.

Artist/Label Biography

Underneath the Official Artist/Label Biographies section is a section for 'Artist/Label Biography'. Logged-in users can upload biographies and make edits to existing user-contributions by clicking the 'Edit this Biography' link. A pop-up edit box will appear if this link is clicked.

When adding/editing a bio, users can use basic HTML styling, plus create links to other BeatWiki pages by adding double square brackets around an artist or a label name (eg: [[Richie Hawtin]] will link to Richie Hawtin's BeatWiki page).

Each revision to a bio is archived and by clicking the 'View Edit History' or 'View Older Versions' links, users are able to see all previous revisions. Beatportal admin can revert back to a previous version of a bio if a user accidentally deletes a bio or adds factually incorrect citations.

Beatport Music Releases

Below 'Artist/Label Biography' is a section called 'Beatport Music Releases' which lists related music releases from Beatport.com.

There are two tabs for 'New Releases' and 'Classics', and each tab displays up to four releases.

Related articles on Beatportal

Below 'Beatport Music Releases' is a section called 'Related Articles on Beatportal' which lists all related content on Beatportal, both user submissions and content produced by Beatportal's editorial team.

Users can submit content about artists and labels directly through a BeatWiki page by clicking the 'Submit Content' link just above the Beatport Player. Users can submit 'News', 'Video', 'Podcast' or 'Radio Show' by clicking the appropriate links in the 'Submit Content' drop down menu. After choosing what content to submit, users must fill out the appropriate details in the form before pressing the 'Submit' button. The content will then be checked by Beatportal admin and should appear on a Beatwiki page within 24 hours, as well as in Beatportal's Community Feed. If the content is deemed particularly good, it will appear in Beatportal's Main Feed/homepage.

Beatport Player

At the bottom of every BeatWiki page is a Beatport Player, related to the artist or record label of that BeatWiki page. The top 10 tracks of an artist/record label that are available on Beatport are listed. At this time, Beatport Players are not customizable.

Discuss This Artist/Discuss This Label

Right at the bottom of every BeatWiki page is a Discuss This Artist/Discuss This Label section, where logged-in users can leave messages and comments as well as discuss artists/labels with other users.

Popular Artists/Popular Labels

On the top right-hand side of every BeatWiki artist page is a section called 'Popular Artists'. At the top of every label page is a section called 'Popular Labels'. These sections are automatically populated by the most popular BeatWiki pages from the last seven days, based on page views, the number of 'Fans' an artist or a label has, or the highest user rated artists and labels.

Related Artists/Labels

Directly below 'Popular Artists/Popular Labels,' is a section called 'Related Artists/Labels'. Here logged-in users are able to create links to other BeatWiki pages related to the page they're on (eg: On Richie Hawtin's BeatWiki page, a link can be added to his record label Minus). To find related artists and labels, search for an artist or label in the Related Artists/Labels search box. Once search results appear, click the '+' symbol next to a search result to add it to a BeatWiki page. To remove a related artist/label from a BeatWiki page, search for the artist/label again and then click the '-' symbol next to the search result.
