Single of the Week: ‘Space EP’

“Thanks for the great honour of choosing ‘Space EP’ as your Single of the Week, we’re very happy,” says Marcus from Minilogue. The Swedish minimal techno duo have been releasing thought-provoking dark techno for the last seven years, for cool labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Traum and Wagon Repair. But it’s their new ‘Space EP’ on Traum which is getting Beatportal excited - it’s our Single of the Week [listen to it in the player below]. We caught up with Sebastien and Marcus from Minilogue to find out more about their style.

What was the original reason that you guys teamed up to make music?

Seb: “We met at techno parties in the mid 1990s and became good friends.

“Seb at the time was working on different music projects within pop and acoustic music whilst Marcus was the local techno hero.

“After a couple of years of friendship we decided to try to fuse our different talents into an electronic music project, and things just rolled on after that.”

And that was back in 2000. How has the techno sound changed over the years?

Marcus: “Minilogue is our house and techno project and all the time we try new things and of course develop our tastes.

“Compared to a few years ago I think our music is now less typical minimal and more organic, psychedelic and musical.

“But we love loads of different music and never restrict ourselves to one genre.

What was the idea behind ‘Space’ and ‘Star Command’?

Seb: “The ‘Space EP’ is a record with two tracks telling different stories about space, bringing you on two very different journeys.

“The title track ‘Space’ brings us to an epic journey that reveals all the colours and beautiful sights of the universe.

“‘Star Command’ on the other hand goes on the darker and deeper side, and to me that track is like traveling slowly in a space shuttle while small things are happening outside, objects moving and turning as they pass on their endless flight.”

It sounds like you two are sci-fi nerds.

Seb: “Sci-fi and space are great inspirations for fantasy and psychedelic moments, so of course it’s easy to get inspired.”

Is your studio set-up like the cockpit of the Starship Enterprise?

Seb: “After all these years we’re finally getting quite a nice set up.

“We love the analogue stuff and work as much as possible with our outboard equipment, recoding as many live sessions as possible, drum machines, synths, sequencers, rhodes, and pianos.

“We’re also extremely addicted to guitar pedals, and at the moment we can’t get enough of them.”
