Fancy some evil acid house and electro? Check out Dusty Kid’s new EP ‘The Cat / The Kitten’. Beatportal caught up with Dusty Kid aka Paolo Alberto Lodde in Sardinia, Italy to find out more about him and his cat Moma.
Why the name Dusty Kid?
“Dusty Kid was the name given to me a few years ago by a well-known Italian DJ/producer when I was working for him.
“He had a studio filled with extremely dusty shelves with vinyls dated from the 1960s to nowadays.
“I spent my afternoons browsing and listening to them and getting myself so dusty, hence the name!”
From the title of your EP ‘The Cat’, one would expect at least some noises of a cat meowing – but all there is a nasty electro bassline and some woman talking about acid. What’s so great about acid?
“Well, to tell you the truth I used the strange and squeaky lead synth to imitate my cat Moma’s meowing and her recklessness, a really unstable and crazy being.
“The woman’s voice you are referring to is mine! I wanted some kind of motto to celebrate my passion for rave parties of the late 1980s when E and acid house ruled.
“It’s a game of words since here in Italy a rude person can be called “acid”. Just like my cat’s character.”
Have you ever given drugs to your cat?
“In one of the many after parties I’ve thrown at my place I’m sure somebody has tried to do it. But Moma is already on a natural high.”
What’s the secret to your huge synth noises – are you a fan of analogue?
“Absolutely yes, I love analog synths from the early 1980s, especially the ones produced by Roland, from the classic Juno 106 and SH 101 to the beast-like sounding TB303 and Jupiter 8.
“In fact ‘The Cat’ was created with those keyboards, and the TR909! I must confess though that I recently discovered Reaktor by Native Instruments and that can take me elsewhere with its sounds.”
Which DJs are playing your music?
“I think that for now there are a few DJs that like my tracks, from the house ones such Hernan Cattaneo, Desyn Masiello and Claudio Coccoluto, to the ones that play more techno such us Sven Väth, Martin Eyerer, Marc Romboy and Erol Alkan.
“I recently found on YouTube a video where both Ritchie Hawtin (my absolute favorite DJ, hence the track ‘I love Ritchie’) and Steve Lawler were playing my tracks.
“They both can be seen playing my tracks, Ritchie even plays two, one right after the other! I thought I was going to faint when I saw the video.”
How do you feel when DJs play your music in clubs?
“If I’m there, I dance! I feel blessed to be part of any DJ’s playlist. No matter who they are it’s always great.”
