Movement 2008 sets the festival bar high

Movement 2008: Detroit Electronic Music Festival went off fabulously last month, and if the good times and choice music alone wasn’t enough, then the real proof is in the numbers.

Paxahau, a promotions group within the electronic music industry and the producers of the three-day festival, have just revealed that attendance from this year’s festival was unprecedented, having far exceeded the set goal of 60,000, and in fact hitting the 80,000 mark.

Dubfirehttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif finished off Detroit’s Movement 2008 in supreme style [check the 7 minute video we found on YouTube!], and he’s just uploaded a DJ chart to Beatport containing some killer techno and minimal cuts.

With tracks from Tobias, Heartthrob, Rekorder and Florian Meindi his chart represents the driving, dark techno sound he’s been pushing lately.

Check out Dubfire’s Top 10 DJ chart in the player after the break, and the video of him ripping up Detroit.

Movement ends, but the memories remain

Movement festival is probably the best large scale electronic music event I’ve been to in the United States.

Everything from the organization, to the line-ups, the festival site, the soundsystems and the music was perfect (the sunny weather helped too).

Movement’s organisers Paxahau really looked after the artists, press and workers behind the scenes by offering top quality catering and free drinks for all.

Even the cops got buffet lunch and dinners.

Transitions at Movement 2008 festival

With a smorgasbord of artists on the bill, Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) was full of people there for all sorts of music.

This year artists ranged from some old school solid performers to new school innovative producers such as Carl Craig, Alex Under, Konrad Black, Kenny Larkin, The Cool Kids, Cobblestone Jazz, and Oscar Mulero.

Paxahau, the festival organizer, did a great job selecting sponsors for its stages to create several diverse areas with varied genres to attract different crowds.

One look at the official lineup reveals what the festival attendees dress code showed us.

Energetic young people in army fatigues and colored hair gathered for drum n’ bass, scenesters in high top sneakers gathered for the electro/hip hop sounds of The Cool Kids, and industry types gathered near the backstage areas of the main stage for the minimal techno sounds found on the beatport stage.

Although this may be the wave of the future, it is also reminiscent of the way older parties used to be set up, when the sounds of jungle, house, and techno were all under one roof.

He turned up to Movement festival in Detroit full of energy and smiles (check after the jump for a video of him rocking the decks), despite the fact he was super tired from spinning in Australia a few days ago.

Along with his record bags Lee also carried a saw, which he had found behind one of the stages at Movement.

Here’s a video of Josh Winkhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif dropping a super-sized tech house bomb at Detroit’s Movement 2008 festival, a track that features a lush African-sounding male vocal.

The crowd went insane when Josh Wink played this track, and after his set Beatportal scrambled to the DJ booth to find out its name.

It’s a Henrik Schwartz track, but we didn’t manage to remember its title (it was late in the day, and the drinking finally caught up with us).

“They call me Grandma Techno,” explained the lady in the motorized scooter.

She was down towards the front of the Beatport stage at Movement festival in Detroit, bopping her head along to the tripped out tech house beats of Lee Burridge.

Detroit’s Movement festival attracts all ages and there were plenty of children and families present at the event, but seeing a lady in her 60s in a granny cart was something we didn’t expect.

Heartthrob’s debut artist album

Just a few moments ago I met Heartthrobhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif aka Jesse Siminski, who’s something of an American minimal werewolf now living in Paris.

Heartthrob moved to Paris “because Europe’s electronic music scene is well established and developed.”

Heartthrob revealed that his debut artist album ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me’ is set for release June 30th on Minushttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif records and is “a collection of tracks that I’ve very proud of.”

Last night, after the Minushttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_l.gif party at St. Andrews Hall, we headed back to the hotel for a little afterparty.

Amongst the crew gathered in the hotel room was Los Angeles-based porn director Jonni Darkko, who is one of the biggest hardcore porn directors in the business.

Jonni is actually a techno producer and DJ on the side, and interestingly he composes the soundtrack for all his films.

“Minimal techno and tech house go very well with sex,” explained Jonni.

Hanging out with Jonni was porn actress Tory Lane (who apparently is quite famous for anyone who knows porn).

With a capacity of around 1000, and with the Minus crew touting their mysterious Cube concept, the demand for tickets was catastrophic.

Deadmau5 the superstar

Deadmau5http://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif has just finished playing on the Beatport stage at Movement 2008, and his live set was really impressive.

Whilst Deadmau5 is known for his huge electro house and progressive hits, he tailored his music for the Detroit techno audience, dropping dark throbbing techno cuts and wicked driving tech house.

It shows that Deadmau5 is a shrewd producer, able to generate all kinds of music.

After his set, he climbed on top of the DJ booth (much to the delight of the crowd) and signaled at them to show some appreciation.

Moby rocks Movement 2008

‘Nobody listens to techno’ Eminem claimed in his famous hate message to Mobyhttp://www.beatportal.com/images/site/misc/wiki_box_a.gif (one of many), but the vegan DJ and simpleton producer just rocked the mainstage of Movement 2008 to thousands of fans.

Moby dropped a mixture of techno and electro house, including cuts from The Chemical Brothers, and the crowd loved him for it.

Daft Punk arrested at Movement 2008

After a large scuffle between Daft Punk’s entourage and police, the cops agreed to let Daft Punk go if the pair admitted that they weren’t in fact, harder, better, faster or stronger than the police.
