Theo Parrish on the sounds of Detroit

This video goes behind the scenes with DJ and producer Theo Parrish as he talks about not only the actual sounds of the city of Detroit, but also their context within the musically rich city.

We get a sneak peek into his music making process and a view into his appreciation for vinyl records.

Theo has dates lined up in several major cities over the next few months — check out the dates on his myspace page.

Daft Punk Vs Kanye West @ the Grammys

Daft Punk is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the US, after the French duo performed live with rapper Kanye West at the 2008 Grammys.

The trio performed a version of ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’ and their show was named by the Los Angeles Times as the best performance of the Grammys, which was broadcast live on TV to millions.

Beatportal interviews Trentemoller

As Danish musician Trentemoller recently trekked North America as part of a tour with his band, Beatportal’s Liz Warner caught up with him to chat about various goings on with his music production.

We chatted about playing with a live band as an electronic musician, ‘The Trentemoller Chronicles’ collection of remixes and unreleased tracks and the making of his ‘Moan’ video.

It was when we turned off the camera that we talked further to learn of Trentemoller’s plans to work with fellow Dane and filmmaker Lars von Trier on soundtrack production for von Trier’s upcoming film.

Look out for a new Trentemoller release ‘Miss You’ on Beatport in March 2008.

Video track listing:

1. Trentemoller ‘Evil Dub’ (Original Mix) [Poker Flat]
2. Trentemoller ‘Moan’ (Trentemoller Remix) [Poker Flat]

Dub War meditates on DMZ’s bass weight

For those of you in the vicinity, New York’s resident purveyors of bass over at Dub War host a bevy of big name talent this Friday during their monthly jump off at Club Love.

Sure, it may be the day after Valentine’s, but what better way to show your love than a marathon session of wanton woofer abuse and half-step beats?

Loefah, longtime resident at London’s groundbreaking DMZ and FWD>> nights and a true standard bearer for the dubstep sound, will be headlining, but with Dusk & Blackdown, the Bomb Squad and Dub War’s in-house DJs Joe Nice and Dave Q rounding out the bill, it promises to be a big night all around.

Love boasts one of the heaviest sound systems in NYC, so expect the bass to be hitting heavy well into the morning!

Check a clip of Loefah dropping his now classic tune “Rufage” at last February’s Dub War after the jump.

Exclusive video: Pacemaker unboxing

We were so excited to receive an exclusive beta version of the Pacemaker, that we almost ripped the box off.

But then we thought of you and realised there’s a whole nation of geeks and DJs salivating over the Pacemaker and its possibilities.

So we decided to film us unboxing the Pacemaker, and our first excited but feeble attempts to mix with it.

The portable DJ mix system is going to revolutionise the way we think of DJing and it’s a hell of a lot of fun, as Beatportal’s editor Terry Church found out.

You can pre-order a Pacemaker at: http://www.pacemaker.net
