FaltyDL: Gospel Of Opal

“Gospel of Opal” is the haunting new number from New York talent FaltyDL. Check out the masterful production on the percussion alone.

If the vocals sound familiar, it might be due to the fact that the singer-Brighton’s Anneka—is no stranger to the Planet Mu team. She’s previously appeared on tracks by Milanese, Vex’d, Starkey, and Ital Tek.

The track is just one of the highlights off Falty’s new album, You Stand Uncertain, out this week. His second album for Planet Mu, it finds the versatile bass-music producer incorporating elements of UK garage, house, broken beat, and drum ‘n’ bass into his deepest, richest offering yet. Check out a sampling below, and don’t miss Falty’s remix on Take’s new Only Mountain: The Remixes, which also features reworks from Eliot Lipp, TOKiMONSTA, Mux Mool, and Shigeto.

Agaric: Who Made Up the Rules

Sweden’s Agaric [a] has a new release on Ovum and a quirkily surreal video to accompany it.

Agaric, aka Patrik Skoog [a], counts more than 100 releases to his name, including records for Kontra Musik, Liebe Detail [l], Syndikaat Records [l], and his own We Are Records [l]; though he’s been recording since 1995, Who Made Up the Rules is his debut longplayer, offering a twisted journey through atmospheric techno, skipping tech-house, and late-night dancefloor meditations. Check out the full album sampler below, as well as a recording of Agaric’s recent live PA at Panorama Bar and a new Beatport top 10.

Justice get civilized

Justice [a] fans began salivating on Monday when the band announced the upcoming release of their new single “Civilization,” due out April 4 on Ed Banger/Because Music. Now fans hungry for more can wipe off their chins and sink their teeth into a teaser for the release, courtesy Adidas and director Romain Gavras, who also directed M.I.A.’s controversial “Born Free” video.

The clip features action footage from a host of sport luminaries—Lionel Messi, David Bekham, Derrick Rose—as well as DJ Mehdi [a], B.o.B, plus a whole bunch of people we can’t identify. (Also, Katy Perry—WTF?) Who else can you pick out?

Wagon Christ: Chunkothy

The legendary Wagon Christ [a] is back with a new album, Toomorrow and a psychedelic, acid-influenced new video for its funky, broken beat track “Chunkothy.”

Also known as Luke Vibert [a], he’s explored virtually every corner of the electronic-music spectrum, releasing nu-disco as Kerrier District, drum ‘n’ bass as Plug, and breakbeat hardcore as Amen Andrews, but his best known pseudonym is undoubtedly his Wagon Christ, which he’s used for a variety of eclectic downtempo sounds on records for Rising High and Ninja Tune [l] since 1994.

Enjoy having your mind twisted by the above video, but be forewarned: watch out for the sinister Mexican cat.

How to produce Maya Jane Coles’ organ lead

Maya Jane Coles’ ”What They Say” was one of the runaway hits of 2010, landing in Beatport’s top 30 most charted tracks of the year, and going all the way to #4 on Resident Advisor’s year-end singles list. The tune’s perky organ lead had a lot to do with the tune’s success, flashing back to a classic ‘90s deep-house vibe, spry and melodic and imbued with a delicious emotional ambiguity.

Now Sounds To Sample’s Marc Adamo walks you through a tutorial in how to craft a similar-sounding lead, from waveforms to detuning to effects. Check out the video above, and don’t miss Coles’ brand-new remix of Fritz & Lang’s ”Crash” on Airdrop Records.
