Top 10 DJ Chart

Carl Craig [Various Artists]

Detroit techno experimentalist Carl Craig [a] recently uploaded a DJ chart to Beatport that showcases the more dancefloor orientated side to his work.

Featuring a number of standout tracks from his much-celebrated Planet E Communications [l] label, Carl Craig’s Top 10 is full of forward-thinking techno grooves and deep electronic symposiums.

Snuff Crew [Playhouse]

With a tip of the hat to classic Chicago house, Snuff Crew [a] deliver a fantastic housey techno EP on Playhouse that will delight DJs both old and new.

With three cuts of superbly crafted, percussive-driven techno, the EP manages to sound wholeheartedly from the early 90s, but also still sounds fresh at the same time. Wow, Playhouse saved a real beauty for their 150th release!

Top 10 DJ Chart

Sébastien Léger [Various Artists]...

French DJ Sebastien Leger [a] is one of the most popular artists on Beatport with his productions nearly always hitting the Top 10.

But whilst his solo productions sit somewhere in between electro, progressive house and tech house, his recent DJ chart on Beatport shows a darker, more techno-orientated side to this talented spinner.

Geo

The Chain [R&S]

If you’re a fan of the very early days of trance when soul collided with hypnotic chords and techy beats, be sure to check ‘Geo’ by The Chain. As former mule electronic [l] artists, Foat & Boddy aka The Chain have been releasing music together for a number of years and with an album planned on R&S next year they are sure to get more fans on the back of this Balearic-sounding release.

Top 10 DJ Chart

Chris Liebing [Various Artists]

German techno DJ Chris Liebing [a] has just uploaded a chart to Beatport that’s full of explosive techno and deep hypnotic bleep music. If you like your techno undiluted and machine-led, this chart is for you.

The Case (of the Lost Jacksters) / Earthquaker

Green Velvet [Relief Records]

Green Velvet [a] aka Cajmere [a] did a huge amount of groundbreaking work in the early days of house and techno, however, it’s clear from his new release ‘The Case (of the Lost Jacksters)’ he’s still very much a forward-thinking man.

This is erratic and bizarre house music that somehow manages to squeeze Green Velvet’s typified hallucinogenic vocals, acid basslines, jazzy pianos, huge organs and bleepy beats into a comprehensively catchy track.

Hot Knives

Slam [Paragraph]

Slam’s new ‘Hot Knives’ track ain’t exactly intricate; but its unashamedly straight-forward approach to ruining a dancefloor will earn it many spins in the coming weeks.

As a tool, it’s about as honest and useful as a chimney sweep, guvnor.

The Windey Man

Justin Maxwell [Palette]

It was a cold and indistinct January morn in the Beatportal office. A guest mix John Tejada [a] put together for Mary Anne Hobbs’ sometimes excellent Radio 1 show was seeping from the speakers.

As Tejada’s mainly solid selection was nearing its conclusion, a horrendous belch of a noise was omitted from the desktop soundsystem; the audio equivalent of a bum regurgitating his mud supper, if you will.

FXHE Catalogue

Omar S [FXHE Records]

Beneath his notorious, expletive-filled bravado – more befitting of the muthafuckin’ streetz of CPT than his celebrated hometown of Detroit – we at Beatport have been privileged enough to see a softer side to Omar S.

How could we have anything bad to say about the most hyped member of Motor City’s already über-hyped third generation when he celebrates Beatport’s 5th birthday by giving us his entire oeuvre to date on an exclusive basis?!

Derive

Mr. Copy [Soma Recordings]

Way back in June 2007, Beatportal organised a remix competition with Scottish techno duo Slam [a] for their single ‘We’re Not Here’, and one of the runners up was a guy named Michael Weldon from Glasgow.

Since then, Weldon aka Mr. Copy, has built up a good relationship with Slam and Soma, and 18 months later one of his tracks is being featured on the label’s fresh talent ‘Somabeta 002’ compilation. ‘Derive’ is an absolute belter of a techno tune.

Equalized #002

EQD [Equalized]

‘Equalized #002’ is the second in a series of releases from an as yet unnamed Hard Wax-affiliated producer.

Arriving almost a full year after its predecessor, #002 is centered around the same rough-and-ready aesthetics that placed ‘#001’ among the most highly sought after releases of 2008.

Maggie

Collabs, Speedy J, Chris Liebing [E...

The great techno love affair between German DJ Chris Liebing [a] and Dutch techno pioneer Speedy J [a] continues with ‘Maggie’, one of the most powerful tools currently doing the rounds in techno clubs.

‘Maggie’ sounds like the name of cute girl, and indeed the 122 BPM rate of the track does suggest it could be more of a waltz than a fist pumper, but make no mistake, this is the perfect track to drop when you want to take your set balls to the wall.

Bruised

Sigha [Hotflush ]

Hotflush’s flirtation with techno in recent weeks has reached the point of a full-on proposition.

‘Bruised’, the debut release from London based producer Sigha [a], drops the horseplay and leads with a deep-as-a-chasm cruise into the world of 4/4.

Timing

Guy Gerber [Cocoon Recordings]

The evolution of Israeli producer Guy Gerber [a] continues with this brilliant two tracker on Cocoon Recordings [l].

The lead track ‘Timing’ is an epic melodic dark techno trip full of rich synth sounds and mainroom potential that we’ve come to love Gerber for.

Top 10 DJ Chart

Bar25 [Various Artists]

The people behind Berlin’s Bar25 [l] may currently be fighting their looming eviction, but that hasn’t stopped them from uploading a Top 10 DJ chart to Beatport, which showcases the kind of fun, wonky music they like to have on at their legendary afterhours spot.

With tracks from Dima [a], Daniel Dreier [a] and Tom Clark [a], the Bar25 To Hibernate (you have to admire their optimism) chart is filled with quality techno and minimal. They surely will be missed.
