Berghain 03

Len Faki [Ostgut Ton]

Two of the exclusive, and most forward-thinking tracks from Len Faki’s critically acclaimed ‘Berghain 03’ mix get their own deserved soap box on Ostgut Ton [l], with Edit Select’s rumbling opener ‘Bauer’ promising a night of atmospherics, and Len Faki’s air-raid techno cut ‘BX 3’ hinting at future desolation. The energy is relentless and the outlook is rather scary.

Finally, ending a two year hiatus after their vinyl distributor went under, Hallucination Recordings is back (in a way).

Label boss and legendary DJ Three [a] has finally started the process of making the content available digitally for the first time ever under the new label Hallucination Limited.

Top 10 DJ Chart

KOS [Various artists]

When I join Nic Fanciulli on tour on Thursday, I’ll also get the chance to hang out with KOS who is one of the most promising new DJ talents from the UK.

With both Nic and James Zabiela heavily supporting the London-based producer and DJ, and KOS [a] on the books of the influential DJ agencies Bullitt bookings and Club Class, there are plenty of people tipping him for greater things.

KOS put together this Global Underground pre-tour Top 10 DJ chart for us, which showcases the deep techno and house sound that has become synonymous with his popular Familia club nights in Britain. It also gives some clue as to what to expect from him during the tour.

Down The Rabbit Hole

DJ Madskillz [100% Pure]

DJ Madskillz [a] sounds like he might be a hip hop DJ with baggy jeans and a cap on sideways yo, but he is in fact a fairly well turned out Dutch lad with an impeccable sense for forward thinking, body rocking tech house.

As his new ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’ EP proves, this guy has got mad skills in the studio (I couldn’t resist).

Sombrero

Paul Ritch [Drumcode]

French techno DJ Paul Ritch [a] showcases his techno prowess yet again with the excellent ‘Solarium’ EP on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode [l].

‘Solarium’ starts off rather laid back and minimal and you’re left wondering if Ritchy boy is getting all soft on you, and then out of nowhere a white noise cannon marks the start of a proper percussive techno thrust. And we’re off!

Top 10 DJ Chart

James Zabiela [Various artists]

British DJ James Zabiela [a] recently uploaded his second ever DJ chart to Beatport and in fine Zabiela form it’s packed with peak-time techy goodness.

Young Zabiela really does love his driving dirty tech house, and we love him for it.

Meltin Pot EP

Mark Broom [Saved Records]

British techno producer Mark Broom [a] is on a major roll at the moment, having dropped a string of brilliant releases in the last couple of months on Code Records, Tronic, Jericho and Soma.

His new ‘Meltin Pot’ EP on Nic Fanciulli’s Saved Records [l] is perhaps one of his finest cuts to date.

Machine EP

Terence Fixmer [Electric Deluxe]

As Dutch techno pioneer Speedy J [a] explains, the music of France’s Terence Fixmer [a] is a fusion between “industrial, techno, minimal and EBM”, as proven by his new ‘Machine’ EP on Speedy’s Electric Deluxe. It’s raw and radical techno, right from the bleeding edge of the machine world, and it’ll scare the bejesus out of most people.

Beat That Bitch (Supernova Remixes)

Johnny Dangerous [Street King]

Johnny Dangerous’ ‘Beat That Bitch’ has been re-released many times since it first came out on white label in the early 1990s, with Mr. V’s 2006 remixes probably having had the most impact. The track even made it onto Pete Tong’s much heralded but now defunct FFRR label back in 1998.

Supernova’s new pair of driving minimal electro-tech remixes however differ wildly from all of the other remakes.

MDR5

Norman Nodge [Marcel Dettmann Recor...

Stark forward thinking techno and minimal isn’t the kind of sound you’d expect from a lawyer and devout family man, but Norman Nodge [a] finds himself back once again on fellow Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann’s self-titled record label.

Following his 2007 ‘NN’ EP, which combined cold basslines with simple techno drums and bleepy minimal slews, the Berghain-affiliated producer’s ‘MDR 5’ follows with subtly evolving techno soundscapes and meticulous, repetitive, stark beats.

Judgement

Jerome Sydenham [Apotek Records]

Jerome Sydenham [a] has to be one of the most underrated producers in the US electronic music scene.

Despite a number of standout cuts like ‘Sandcastles’ (which he produced with Dennis Ferrer), ‘Elephant’ (one of the biggest techno tracks of 2007, produced alongside Rune), ‘GSXR 810’ and ‘Son of Raw’ (another Ferrer collaboration) he is rarely given his dues in the press and blog world.

‘Judgement’ is yet another outstanding Sydenham groove that will probably shift hundreds of thousands of feet this summer thanks to its usefulness as a DJ tool, yet it’ll probably remain under the radar of most people.

Circuits / AWC Part III

Adam Beyer [Truesoul]

Swedish techno DJ Adam Beyer [a] runs a network of highly credible techno labels, and Truesoul [l] is his outlet for the more soulful, deep tracks that he and his techno buddies produce.

Truesoul rarely speaks - the label clocks up about one record a quarter - but when it does, it’s always pure quality, as displayed on Beyer’s new ‘Circuits / AWC Part III’.

Who Taught You Math? (Shonky In The Hood Remix)

Robert Hood [Freak N Chic]

Blasphemous this might be to fans of Robert Hood’s distinct Detroit minimalist techno, but this remix of ‘Who Taught You Math?’ by Berlin-based producer Shonky [a] does a fabulous job of making the 2002 record more friendly for today’s house and techno swingers.
