Highlife EP

Sasha Vs. Adam Parker [Renaissance]...

Sasha [a] is back on top of the progressive house world once again, with the lucid and ethereal ‘Lowlife’, a remix of a track by London singer-songwriter Adam Parker.

As featured on Sasha’s recent smash hit mix compilation ‘Invol2ver’, this release on Renaissance sees a new mix of the track arrive much to the delight of dark melodic house fans.

Take It Or Leave It

16 Bit Lolitas, Ohmna [Bits & Piece...

Shimmering progressive house is a rarity these days, and 16 Bit Lolitas [a] are one of a few artists still committed to the ethereal and provide it regularly via their excellent label Bits & Pieces [l].

Here with Ohmna on ‘Take It Or Leave It’, the Lolitas provide a blissful melodic electronic house trip that will keep those with a dark house tooth moving.

Cause And Effect EP

Montero [Flat Belly Recordings]

Ever since Montero’s ‘Captain Hook’ dropped on Renaissance in 2006 I’ve been a big fan of the Belfast duo’s music. Their chunky progressive house cuts always wink at electro house but never fully embrace the brashness, and they always work on the floor.

As such, Montero has become a firm favourite for DJs like James Zabiela (who included ‘Captain Hook’ on his famed ‘Utilities’ mix compilation), Sasha and Sander Kleinenberg.

Their new ‘Cause And Effect’ EP on Ricky Stone’s Flat Belly Recordings is another example of the kind of quality pumping house they’ve become accomplished at.

Afterburner

Neil Quigley [Forensic Records]

Londoner Neil Quigley [a] is hotly tipped by John Digweed [a] for greatness, having warmed up for the progressive house giant at his Bedrock parties on numerous occasions.

Renaissance and Urban Torque, two British imprints that fly the flag for high quality progressive music, is also supportive of Quigley who has been yearning to be a bigger part of the London prog scene for a number of years.

Quigley’s new ‘Afterburner’ track on Forensic Records [l] shows exactly the kind of deep and thoughtful progressive house he is all about.

Connect The Dots

Yotopia [Iboga Records]

Israel continues to churn out accomplished progressive house and trance producers at an impressive rate (there must be something in the water that stimulates dark melodies and hypnotism), and Yotopia [a] are the latest duo to offer a tasty album of darkly satisfying melodic club cuts.

The Tel Aviv-based duo’s new album ‘Connect The Dots’ blurs the lines between progressive house and trance with ease, and the LP flows with the kind of ease one would expect from a well planned DJ set.

Shaman

Guy J [Turbo Recordings]

Guy J [a] deserves a medal for his services to progressive house, so innovative and crucial have his productions been to the genre. His tracks stand tall and proud in a field of dying poppies, unafraid of their melodic heritage yet respective of the need for change.

Guy J’s new track ‘Shaman’ is a perfect example of the kind of risks progressive house producers need to take.

Top 10 DJ Chart

Sébastien Léger [Various Artists]...

French DJ Sebastien Leger [a] is one of the most popular artists on Beatport with his productions nearly always hitting the Top 10.

But whilst his solo productions sit somewhere in between electro, progressive house and tech house, his recent DJ chart on Beatport shows a darker, more techno-orientated side to this talented spinner.

The Deep End

Curses! [Institubes]

Luca Venezia – aka NYC’s bassline champion Drop The Lime [a] – returns with a swagger to the Institubes stage behind his housier guise, Curses! [a], to offer a TWA (tune wiv attiude) that will smack you round the face and leave your sorry ass battered and bruised.

That’s a good thing, though. Forget all this softly-softly dance music that wouldn’t even offend your Grandma these days, ‘The Deep End’ sticks it to the man, middle finger up, jeans ripped, nipple pierced.

Danny Howells [Dig Deeper]

After vacating the production limelight for so many years, the trickle of recent material from Danny Howells [a] should actually be considered a torrent.

Choosing his ‘Renaissance: The Mix Collection’ album to showcase a small collection of original production towards the end of last year, Howells now returns with a fresh offering on his brand new Dig Deeper label.

The Way

Pole Folder [La Tour]

A true master of the progressive house scene, Pole Folder [a] aka Benoit Franquet, is the epitome of the genre’s once perceived sophisticated mysticism.

Resolutely loyal to prog’s dark hypnotism, Franquet’s meticulous attention to detail and multi-layered approach to electronic music is all the more bold in an era of minimal pervasiveness.

My Own Disillusion EP

Monojoke [Carica Deep]

Monojoke’s ‘Disillusion’ EP is great forward thinking progressive house, which is something of a rarity these days. Warm, panoramic synthesizers and pads cloak the Polish producer’s music with rich melancholic textures, and the essential euphoric build of the genre is razor sharp here.

Darkroom

Jerome Sydenham [UK Promotions]

Darker house music isn’t exactly in abundance these days, what with the deeper tribal instincts of progressive house having been taken over by electro basslines, and real instruments and worldly influences having landed joyfully in techno.

‘Darkroom’ by Jerome Sydenham [a] however, arrives on dancefloors like a thunderous cloud of doom from Transylvania.

Songful Bird (Deep Vocal Mix)

Terry Grant [System]

Terry Grant’s got a way with deadpan female vocals that nonetheless convey all sorts of darkness: Check out 2006’s “Misery”-like monologue ‘I’ll Kill You’ on ‘Bedrock’, his debut release.

The Fugitive (Sei A Mix) (Sei A)

Justin Martin [Buzzin' Fly Records]...

Justin Martin [a]‘s relationship with Buzzin’ Fly has brought us a string of high quality and internationally acclaimed releases, starting with ‘The Sad Piano’ back in 2003, and most recently the double header that was the ‘Chaos Restored 2’ compilation and latest single ‘My Angelic Demons’.

It’s from this latest single that comes this reworking of the 2006 classic ‘The Fugitive’ is made available, following a remix contest held by the label.

Alma En Casa EP

Somnus Corp [Discoteca Music]

Mexican trio Somnus Corp [a] are still relative newcomers to the underground progressive scene, but are already gaining recognition from DJs such as John Digweed [a], Sasha [a] and Nick Warren [a] with their powerful atmospheric house sound.

While their released body of work is still in its infancy, this EP project entitled ‘Alma En Casa’ is a superb introduction to their work.
