My Left Tool
October [Perspectiv Records]
October’s ‘Say Again’ was one of Ewan Pearson’s favourite tracks from last year, and October’s follow up on Ripperton’s Perspectiv Records
is quickly gaining similar reactions.
The Bristol-based producer has seemingly developed a knack for haunting and twisted minimal techno that goes well beyond just using simple elements to reach the point of minimalism.

Beat That Bitch (Supernova Remixes)
Johnny Dangerous [Street King]
Johnny Dangerous’ ‘Beat That Bitch’ has been re-released many times since it first came out on white label in the early 1990s, with Mr. V’s 2006 remixes probably having had the most impact. The track even made it onto Pete Tong’s much heralded but now defunct FFRR label back in 1998.
Supernova’s new pair of driving minimal electro-tech remixes however differ wildly from all of the other remakes.

Conspiracy (Nima Gorji Remix)
Shaun King [Microfreak Records]
Nima Gorji
is the resident DJ of one of Ibiza’s best clubs - Ibiza Underground - a small, out-of-the-way club run by Nick Fry, a talented and respected club owner who cares nothing for commercial success.
So committed is Fry to providing a perfect club environment with like-minded individuals that when I interviewed him back in August 2008 he revealed that he actively avoids advertising and never ever announces the club’s line-ups. They don’t charge on the door either.

Top 10 DJ Chart
Bar25 [Various Artists]
The people behind Berlin’s Bar25
may currently be fighting their looming eviction, but that hasn’t stopped them from uploading a Top 10 DJ chart to Beatport, which showcases the kind of fun, wonky music they like to have on at their legendary afterhours spot.
With tracks from Dima
, Daniel Dreier
and Tom Clark
, the Bar25 To Hibernate (you have to admire their optimism) chart is filled with quality techno and minimal. They surely will be missed.

SIS [Various]
Beyond his ubiquitous releases last year, very little is known about Turkish born, Frankfurt resident Burak Star aka SIS
.
Perhaps taking his media training from fellow press-dodger Ricardo Villalobos
, (who outputted his brass-meets-house anthem ‘Trompeta’ last year through his own Sei Es Drum label) SIS has been flying under the radar since his November 2007 release ‘La Gurua’ pricked up the ears of the electronic community.

Under The Willow
Ryan Crosson [Alphahouse]
The slightly warped releases of Ryan Crosson
have marked him out as a key player in the North American techno nu-school, and here he returns to Butane’s Alphahouse imprint for more sinister fun.
Honing down the ricocheting percussion of his other work into a starker, sharper groove, both tracks are designed with the foggy hours of the night in mind.

Time Out The Gap EP
Donato Dozzy [Railyard Recordings]
Another great signing from Brooklyn’s Railyard crew, this time in the form of micro-maestro Donato Dozzy.
It’s been a good year for the Italian DJ/producer, with wider audiences finally catching on to his distinctive blend of pulsing minimalism and sleek, refined techno.

Forbidden Mantra
Rudolf [Serialism Records]
Londoner Rudolf
dropped his debut album ‘Below The Crime Scene’ on Archipel
earlier on this year, and although his bubbly minimal cuts had a decent warbling groove, on the most part they were too scatty to be appreciated beyond the minimal niche.
‘Forbidden Mantra’ changes things somewhat.

Aroma EP
Paul Brtschitsch and Cio D'or [Broq...
Veteran engineer and head of Frisbee Paul Brtschitsch
has already gained props this year for both his solo work and his collaborations with Mobilee’s Anja Schneider
, and now he’s back alongside hotly-tipped techno femme Cio D’or.
Combining his flair for dubbed out echoes and her pulsing melodic tendencies, ‘Aroma EP’ offers dancefloor boom and pastoral headiness in equal measure.

Empire In Decline / Third Piece
Peter Van Hoesen [Time To Express]
It’s been a good year for Brussels-based Peter Van Hoesen
, whose gritty, abstract approach to dancefloor techno has won him plaudits from across the techno spectrum.
This third outing on his own Time To Express
imprint sees Van Hoesen doing what he does best - no-nonsense, gimmick-free gear that’s ominously sinister and deeply alluring in equal measure.
Comptine D´un Autre Ete L. ‘Apre Midi
Jay Haze & Yann Tierson [Tuning Spo...
If you didn’t know already, this is ‘that one’ from the charming French flick ‘Amelie’ - you know, the one with the twinkling pianos that plays regularly throughout the film as the doe-faced starlet bumbles about in Paris.
While to some this Haze-ified rework will sound somewhat on the twee side, those with a weakness for pretty, plaintive melodies will be overjoyed to see that this is finally available on Beatport.
Fresh 727
Falko Brocksieper [Sub Static]
It’s been a good year for Sub Static
boss Falko Brocksieper
, who’s acclaimed ‘Heavy Day’ album combined classic house moods and up-to-date production finesse in fine style.
Hot on its heels comes this double header, and it’s the kind of high-class, low-slung roller we’ve come to expect.

Sexplosion EP
Sex Trothler [Wagon Repair]
Time to get your sleaze on as Detroit dude Seth Troxler debuts on Wagon Repair, in his Sex Trothler guise (arf, arf).
Smirking aside, this pair of deeply alluring cuts prove that the much-vaunted Troxler is more than capable of living up to the hype.
