Focus On: Boysnoize Records

Various Artists [Boysnoize Records]...

With 11 loud and lairy indie dance/electro classics on one release, listening to ‘Focus On: Boysnoize Records’ is like having a large glass of hydrochloric acid tossed in your face.

Ok maybe that doesn’t sound like much fun, and that would be doing this marvelous release a major injustice as all of its tunes are a rip-roaring delight, but they do serve as a bleeding-great-big call to arms for anyone who likes their dance music noisy and rock-tinged.

Anthonio

Annie [Black Melody]

Upon first listen of the Designer Drugs Remix of Annie’s infectious new single ‘Anthonio’ my immediate thought was that her voice sounded just like Stacey Q singing the 1986 synthpop hit ‘Two of Hearts’.

I even made a note of it for when writing this review; so imagine my self-congratulations when, upon checking out her myspace, I find that she has a cover of the very same song in her player.

Thankfully the similarities to Stacey Q end there.

Sonar

Aufgang [InFine Music]

When I started listening to Aufgang ‘Sonar’, something inside me started crying. It was almost as if someone had peeled away my layers of skin, exposing me to the world.

Electronic music doesn’t often have the emotional intent and power of classical music, but ‘Sonar’ sure comes damn close.

In For The Kill (Lifelike Remix)

La Roux [Kitsune]

La Roux, the production duo consisting of Ben Langmaid and Elly Jackson were 2008’s hot tip for chart success with their penchant for 80’s sounding electro pop combined with Elly’s sultry, diva vocals.

At the time of writing La Roux was residing in the Top 5 UK singles chart having been signed to Polydor and it seems like everyone was right.

Arthur Russell Interpretations

various artists [Electric Minds]

Perhaps you’ve yet to hear about London’s nudisco label Electric Minds [l]. If so, their 10th release which celebrates the label’s first anniversary is a fine example of the kind of high quality disco-inspired music they’re about.

With this release, Electric Minds pays tribute to one of the least known but perhaps most respected contributors to the disco genre; Arthur Russell (1952 – 1992).

Jaimie Fanatic [various artists]

Rotterdam-based producer Jaimie Fanatic [a] is about to blow up with a new single out on Mad Decent [l] that officially initiates him into Diplo’s crew. They’re proving to be one of the tightest, coolest, and most successful music-production rings in the business, moving glowsticks in Boise as easily as they’re shaking asses in Baltimore.

Hazel (Ewan Pearson Extended Disco Edit)

Junior Boys [Domino]

Junior Boys [a] return after their previous sophomore offerings with something a little bit more upbeat, ‘Hazel’ is the first sneak peak from their upcoming album, ‘Begone Dull Care’.

Remixed by none other than plat-de-jour producer Ewan Pearson [a] this fancy electronic pop track has been given an electro-disco makeover.

Magic Journey (Todd Terje Remix)

Rogue Cat [Tiny Sticks]

Ok so picture this: You’re lost in the narrow lanes of East London having consumed some psychedelic rainbow dust when you accidentally stumble onto the set of a Scandinavian-themed kids TV programme, you might now be able to fathom this cosmic disco track’s medium.

Concocted from deep within the cave of Dean Meredith from the Chicken Lips [a]’ cavern and re-amalgamated by the Norwegian space fairing, cosmic commander and Galactic Lord of the Re-edit, Todd Terje [a] emerges ‘Magic Journey’.

Young Heartache

Bullion [One Handed Music]

Every now and again when digging through the plethora of tracks in existence, you stumble across one of those undiscovered gems, a masterpiece that often slips through the cracks. ‘Young Heartache’ is certainly one of those tracks.

After a shady tip off from a certain Dutch dubstep producer, I investigated further into this new up and coming London-based producer and acquired the track ‘Young Heartache’, an LA-styled, electro hip-hop, psychedelic offering.

The Deep End

Curses! [Institubes]

Luca Venezia – aka NYC’s bassline champion Drop The Lime [a] – returns with a swagger to the Institubes stage behind his housier guise, Curses! [a], to offer a TWA (tune wiv attiude) that will smack you round the face and leave your sorry ass battered and bruised.

That’s a good thing, though. Forget all this softly-softly dance music that wouldn’t even offend your Grandma these days, ‘The Deep End’ sticks it to the man, middle finger up, jeans ripped, nipple pierced.

Sunset feat. Yota

Lifelike [Vulture]

Lifelike [a] returns with a classic slice of French house on Alan Braxe [a]’s Vulture [l] label.

Following on from the success of ‘Discopolis’, which at one point came close to total global domination, the French prodigy lays down more smooth house beats using the same template of euphoric builds and crisp 4/4 beats.

King of the Witches

Capracara [DFA]

If you’re one for the undiluted acid house of yesteryear, the UK’s Jonathan Burnip aka Capracara [a] might be your man to deliver the goods.

Burnip’s forays of late include remixes for Matt Edwards’ Rekids [l] imprint, a side project with Joel Martin of Quiet Village, and contributions to the disco label History Clock.

Suckerpin (Feadz Remix)

Modeselektor [Bpitch Control]

‘Suckerpin’ is a deadly super-force and combines French house and German techno to produce a powerful dancefloor hit.

Having joined the ‘balls out’ techno of the original with that characteristic sound only Ed Banger can muster, this is a real cross-the-genres track that gleefully resides in its own domain.

Stand On The Word

Joubert Singers [Hot Coins Remix]

Previously featured on the Unabomber ‘Electric Chair’ compilation and then turned into a French pop classic by Keedz (which, by the way, sounded remarkably like their French counterparts Justice [a]), this gospel track originally released in 1985 gets a spacey remix by Hot Coins [a], courtesy of Tirk [l].

Well let’s not get ahead of ourselves, this is the world of nu-disco and to say this is a ‘remix’ would be pushing the boat out a bit, this is nothing more than a ‘re-edit’ of the original, with some added beats, bass and cosmic breakdowns.

Sapphire

Zombi [Throne of Blood]

As nu-disco emerges ever more into the limelight, different styles, sub categories and trends begin to emerge, split off and develop into their own sounds; similar to how life first began on Earth.

Whether or not Charles Darwin would have made comparisons between the growing patterns of nu-disco and the evolution of mankind is a separate question entirely, yet I’m sure, given the chance, he would have given it half a mention in ‘The Origin of Species’ had he heard this blissful prog-disco record on ‘Throne of Blood’.
