Pompadour

Chelonis R. Jones [Systematic Recor...

There’s something about Chelonis R. Jones’ voice that suits dark house music, and as such, his music is well crafted for Marc Romboy’s Systematic Recordings and the likes of Get Physical.

‘Pompadour’ is the second single to be released from Chelonis R. Jones [a] album ‘Chatterton’, and is one of the LP’s more epic, end-of-the-night tracks.

Top 10 DJ Chart

Dimitri From Paris [Various artists...

France officially recognised Dimitri From Paris’ contribution to music by awarding him a Knight of the Arts and Letters in February 2005, so intrinsic has he been to the country’s development of house music.

Dimitri uploaded his first ever DJ chart to Beatport this week, and it shows how the award-winning producer, remixer and DJ is firmly rooted in ‘70s funk and disco. He loves uplifting soulful vocal house music and listening to it just makes you want to break out the flares and roll on down to the roller disco.

Willie Graff, Tuccillo [Freerange R...

As resident DJ of Cielo in New York and Pacha in Ibiza, Willie Graff [a] has seen his profile rise steadily in house music circles in recent years (UK house pioneer Danny Rampling once named Willie Graff a future star in DJ Magazine).

This production sees Graff team up with King Street regular Tuccillo [a] for a peak time, funky house cut that winks cheekily at the filtered disco days.

Joey Negro [Various Artists]

As a founding father of the UK soulful house scene, Joey Negro aka Dave Lee, has created some of the house scene’s biggest records under his plethora of aliases which include Jakatta, The Sunburst Band, Raven Maize, Z Factor and Doug Willis.

He recently uploaded a Top 10 DJ chart to Beatport that features nothing but pure house music grooves. It’s deep, soulful and sexy.

Feelin’

Pitto [Rejected]

Pitto’s ubiquitous house bomb ‘Sexvibe’ was one of the biggest records of 2008, and now the Dutch producer is back with another huge house workout ‘Feelin’’ that will surely cause many a dancefloor scuffle in the coming months.

Think Cassius on speed.

Snuff Crew [Playhouse]

With a tip of the hat to classic Chicago house, Snuff Crew [a] deliver a fantastic housey techno EP on Playhouse that will delight DJs both old and new.

With three cuts of superbly crafted, percussive-driven techno, the EP manages to sound wholeheartedly from the early 90s, but also still sounds fresh at the same time. Wow, Playhouse saved a real beauty for their 150th release!

The Case (of the Lost Jacksters) / Earthquaker

Green Velvet [Relief Records]

Green Velvet [a] aka Cajmere [a] did a huge amount of groundbreaking work in the early days of house and techno, however, it’s clear from his new release ‘The Case (of the Lost Jacksters)’ he’s still very much a forward-thinking man.

This is erratic and bizarre house music that somehow manages to squeeze Green Velvet’s typified hallucinogenic vocals, acid basslines, jazzy pianos, huge organs and bleepy beats into a comprehensively catchy track.

Sunset feat. Yota

Lifelike [Vulture]

Lifelike [a] returns with a classic slice of French house on Alan Braxe [a]’s Vulture [l] label.

Following on from the success of ‘Discopolis’, which at one point came close to total global domination, the French prodigy lays down more smooth house beats using the same template of euphoric builds and crisp 4/4 beats.

When Bad People Cook Good Food

Various [Fresh Meat]

Mazi Namvar, label head of Fresh Meat [l] and pioneer of the new school Chicago house sound, suggested in a recent interview that the city’s bubbling talent was alive and well, percolating to the surface from the underground.

On a mission to further the cause, Fresh Meat has released a monster of an LP comprised of a Grade A cut of what’s been happening on the imprint lately.

‘When Bad People Cook Good Food’ is a compilation covering the first three years of the Chicago label, with a whole roster of top notch talent showing up to take a bow.

For The Lost

The Mole [Internasjonal]

Who exactly does The Mole [a] belong to? Disparate imprints have housed his ever-green grooves across the course of his fruitful journey; Philpot [l], Kompakt [l], Spectral Sound [l] and of course Wagon Repair [l] have all offered him a room at the inn at one point or another.

The fact is, the The Mole’s output seems to fit glove-like wherever it resides; none more so perhaps than Internasjonal [l], the sparkling release arm of Mr. Prins Thomas [a].

In Your Handbag!

Roska [Roska Kick & Snares]

Roska [a] is quickly becoming the golden boy of UK house in 2009, with his past life as a garage producer and MC giving his quirky productions a solid urban flavour. We recently named Roska as one of our producers to watch in 2009, and ‘In Your Handbag!’ shows why.

Keep It Dirty EP

Boola [Lomidhigh Organic]

Romanian upstart Boola [a] takes two steps forward and two to the left(field) on the ‘Keep It Dirty EP’, his second release for Lomidhigh Organic [l] this month.

The Danish label could have put out a mini album of his material when combined with the weirdly wonderful ‘Astroceva EP’ from a couple of weeks back, although with a debut LP for Rekids [l] in the pipeline, all is not lost.

If there is one trait that has characterized Boola’s output to date, it is a willingness to stick his neck out and try something different. The beauty of this release is that of the three tracks, two work rather effectively and one spectacularly doesn’t, however you almost find yourself forgiving just for taking the risk in the first place.

Darkroom

Jerome Sydenham [UK Promotions]

Darker house music isn’t exactly in abundance these days, what with the deeper tribal instincts of progressive house having been taken over by electro basslines, and real instruments and worldly influences having landed joyfully in techno.

‘Darkroom’ by Jerome Sydenham [a] however, arrives on dancefloors like a thunderous cloud of doom from Transylvania.
