Sonar

Aufgang [InFine Music]

When I started listening to Aufgang ‘Sonar’, something inside me started crying. It was almost as if someone had peeled away my layers of skin, exposing me to the world.

Electronic music doesn’t often have the emotional intent and power of classical music, but ‘Sonar’ sure comes damn close.

Gumball Machine Weekend

Yppah [Ninja Tune]

Known also as Joe Corrales, Jr., Yppah [a] blends the warmth of guitars, live drums, flutes, keyboards, and tambourines with psychedelic drum samples, forming a blissfully sweet narrative.

Yppah’s new ‘Gumball Machine Weekend’ EP on Ninja Tune [l] is a gorgeous and thoroughly uplifting slice of downtempo mastery.

Jamie Vex’d [Planet Mu]

Jamie Vex’d has had a busy year what with re-locating to Berlin, having his first child and embarking on his ambitious solo career, so it’s amazing that he’s still managing to lead the electronica and dubstep pack with his ingenuity in the studio.

This track, his first solo release since departing ways with Roly Porter is a science fiction, soul driven mind bender of a track with obscure beat patterns and deep vocal samples.

Young Heartache

Bullion [One Handed Music]

Every now and again when digging through the plethora of tracks in existence, you stumble across one of those undiscovered gems, a masterpiece that often slips through the cracks. ‘Young Heartache’ is certainly one of those tracks.

After a shady tip off from a certain Dutch dubstep producer, I investigated further into this new up and coming London-based producer and acquired the track ‘Young Heartache’, an LA-styled, electro hip-hop, psychedelic offering.

The Offbeat

FLYamSAM [Ghostly International]

If FLYamSAM is sounding rudely familiar then look no further than Los Angeles Brainfeeder cohorts Flying Lotus [a] and Samiyam [a].

It’s as if these guys weren’t cool enough already, they had to had to join forces and form a supergroup.

? / The Hologram

Mark Pritchard [Ho Hum]

The first release on new eclectic London imprint Ho Hum sees the iconic Mark Pritchard [a] leaving his 23rd century robot-dubstep manifestation behind and producing something completely removed from this body of work.

Played to death by the High Priestess of experimental, Mary Ann Hobbs, this is a wondrous transgression into heavenly ambient, emotive-electronica.

Mount Kimbie [Hotflush Recordings]

Mount Kimbie were included in the handful of artists selected by Beatportal as ones to watch in 2009, and this, their debut release on Hotflush Recordings [l] is a clear indication as to why they were chosen.

With an extended intro consisting of nothing more than reverberated guitars, the 2 step kick shuffle kicks in at around 1:30, with added claps, clicks and sublime child like vocal snippets thrown in.

Hudson Mohawke [Warp Records]

2008 was the year of Glasgow, in which our audio spectrum was infiltrated by the likes of Rustie [a], Heralds of Change, Hudson Mohawke [a] and Stuff Records [l].

Never one to miss a good thing, our good friends at Warp Records [l] jumped on the next commuter train with pen and paper at the ready and snapped up this new up and coming talent, showering them with album deals and promising futures.

I Don’t Need Competition

Gonno [Beyond]

‘Tis the season for lush, melodic techno, and this first release from mysterious new label Beyond [a] is bursting with elegant, Detroit-inspired moods.

Flanked by a remix from Donnacha Costello [a] [l], Japanese producer Gonno’s richly textured sound will find favour with fans of deep, classically-inclined techno of the highest order.

RobertaFlack (Martyn’s Heart Beat Mix)

Flying Lotus [Warp Records]

To start off with, ‘RobertaFlack’ had to be the stand out track from Flying Lotus’s phenomenal ‘Los Angeles’ album - its stunning ambience and soothing vocals took me back to my ‘Blue Lines’ days.

To then have this track remixed by Martyn [a], the king of everything that is heavenly and deep, is like pairing up the wonders of John and Paul, Kris and Kross, or Marmite with toast.

Ada [IRR (International Records Rec...

It’s only three releases in, but the Areal sister label IRR has delivered nothing but quality so far, with the likes of DJ Koze and Jon Daly offering up a distinctly leftfield slant on the prevalent deep house moods of the moment.

Ada’s first release for the label continues the form, with two tracks of sweet, soothing electronics.

Jochen Arbeit [a] usually plays guitar for one of Berlin’s most remarkable and influential bands of all time, Einstürzende Neubauten, who, next to Kraftwerk and Can, have helped to shape the contemporary musical landscape of Germany.

Rabimmel With A Vengeance

DJ Koze, Ada, Dee Pulse, Basteroid...

As was the case last year, Hamburg’s DJ Koze [a] has had a quietly assured 2008.

Choosing to throw himself further into the leftfield via remixes for Noze [a], Matias Aguayo [a] and most notably Sascha Funke [a], it was only on his delectable ‘Let’s Love/I Want To Sleep’ double-header that the producer found himself in a space somewhere near to the ‘normality’ of a club track.
