Taken from the absurdly good debut album from Mistabishi on Hospital Records comes ‘From Memory’, a track that takes d&b to a whole new level, combining epic post-rock with modern neuro, hard- edged d&b.
The entire album is full of highly creative and infectious bangers, from the apocalyptic anthem ‘Printer Jam’, through to the early nineties themed ‘No Matter What’, and ‘From Memory’ which concludes the album in an altogether deeper and profound way.

Everybody (Danny Byrd Remix)
Rudenko [Dirty Soul]
After dropping his debut album on Hospital Records last year, the Byrd-man from Bath has been busy on remix duties applying his brand of soulful, rave-style beats to a plethora of big time tunes, with this r&b pop treat being the first for 2009.
With High Contrast remixing Eric Prydz, Adele, MGMT and literally everyone else under the sun, it seems that liquid-style drum & bass remixes, a la Hospital Records, are the current plat de jour.

The Qemists featuring Wiley [Ninja...
The Qemists are making up their own rules regarding production, and their highly energetic, charging rock-style drum & bass is beginning to make Pendulum sound like The Carpenters in comparison.
Their previous release with Mike Patton on vocals was described as the best song Faith No More didn’t write, and with this new offering roping in the godfather of grime, Wiley, The Qemists have become the grittiest urban outfit to emerge from the streets of London town.

Commix have recently been quoted as saying that that current drum & bass climate is depressing, and that their tastes are leaning more towards techno and house artists like Ben Watt and Cobblestone Jazz.
Taken from the latest Dat Music compilation on Soul:R, ‘Underwater Scene’ (track 19 in the player) is a clinical representation of the music and sounds that are influencing Commix whilst showing a new, more intelligent direction within the scene. It is perhaps the closest you’ll ever get to merging techno with drum & bass.

Renegade Snares (High Contrast Remix)
Omni Trio [Moving Shadow]
Originally released in 2003, the style, production and sound of this track in no way sounds dated on this collaboration from two of drum & bass’ finest innovators.
Released towards the end of Moving Shadow’s great tenure, this track has been described as “a match made in heaven”, as it brought together the pioneer of intelligent drum & bass Rob Playford, with a fresh faced High Contrast before he had made his huge musical impact.

Having been in the scene for some time, producing some blisteringly hard tunes for Subtitles and Vision, Phace and Misanthrop have joined forces to launch their new label, Neosignal, to try and establish a stronghold of cutting-edge, neurofunk drum & bass.
The first release, ‘Cold Champagne’ is the ultimate showcase for the label’s future releases; the sound is characteristically dark and eerie but also dynamic and gut wrenchingly heavy.

The Truth
Break [Symmetry]
If he doesn’t win the best contribution to drum & bass award for 2008, he will easily win the hardest worked award.
And this is where it all kicked off on his Symmetry imprint back in 2006. Now finally available on digital, ‘The Truth’ is a devastating hard edged hitting anthem combining in his influences of heavy beats and jungle with which one can hear the likes of Fierce and Calyx screaming through.

Culture Shock [RAM Records]
Featured earlier this year on the fourth installment of Andy C’s ‘Nightlife’ series, this track is perhaps one of the most unique tunes to come out of the drum & bass scene this year.
With more emphasis on its 4/4 structure and less on the breakbeats, this offering from d&b new boy Culture Shock washes over, sounding like a hybrid between Etienne De Crecy and Sub Focus.

Digital Soundboy Recordings kick off a remix series of big classics with Break’s take on Shy FX’s late nineties jungle classic ‘Bambaata’.
Break has been flooring it recently with his hard-edged, poisonous tunes. His new album on Symmetry has been applauded by everyone, whilst recent tunes such as ‘Splash Step’ and ‘Coming From the Top’ with DJ Die have been on all the DJs playlists for the past few months.
