Afterburner

Neil Quigley [Forensic Records]

Londoner Neil Quigley [a] is hotly tipped by John Digweed [a] for greatness, having warmed up for the progressive house giant at his Bedrock parties on numerous occasions.

Renaissance and Urban Torque, two British imprints that fly the flag for high quality progressive music, is also supportive of Quigley who has been yearning to be a bigger part of the London prog scene for a number of years.

Quigley’s new ‘Afterburner’ track on Forensic Records [l] shows exactly the kind of deep and thoughtful progressive house he is all about.

Beat That Bitch (Supernova Remixes)

Johnny Dangerous [Street King]

Johnny Dangerous’ ‘Beat That Bitch’ has been re-released many times since it first came out on white label in the early 1990s, with Mr. V’s 2006 remixes probably having had the most impact. The track even made it onto Pete Tong’s much heralded but now defunct FFRR label back in 1998.

Supernova’s new pair of driving minimal electro-tech remixes however differ wildly from all of the other remakes.

MDR5

Norman Nodge [Marcel Dettmann Recor...

Stark forward thinking techno and minimal isn’t the kind of sound you’d expect from a lawyer and devout family man, but Norman Nodge [a] finds himself back once again on fellow Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann’s self-titled record label.

Following his 2007 ‘NN’ EP, which combined cold basslines with simple techno drums and bleepy minimal slews, the Berghain-affiliated producer’s ‘MDR 5’ follows with subtly evolving techno soundscapes and meticulous, repetitive, stark beats.

In For The Kill (Lifelike Remix)

La Roux [Kitsune]

La Roux, the production duo consisting of Ben Langmaid and Elly Jackson were 2008’s hot tip for chart success with their penchant for 80’s sounding electro pop combined with Elly’s sultry, diva vocals.

At the time of writing La Roux was residing in the Top 5 UK singles chart having been signed to Polydor and it seems like everyone was right.

Arthur Russell Interpretations

various artists [Electric Minds]

Perhaps you’ve yet to hear about London’s nudisco label Electric Minds [l]. If so, their 10th release which celebrates the label’s first anniversary is a fine example of the kind of high quality disco-inspired music they’re about.

DJ Chart

Jaimie Fanatic [various artists]

Rotterdam-based producer Jaimie Fanatic [a] is about to blow up with a new single out on Mad Decent [l] that officially initiates him into Diplo’s crew. They’re proving to be one of the tightest, coolest, and most successful music-production rings in the business, moving glowsticks in Boise as easily as they’re shaking asses in Baltimore.

Judgement

Jerome Sydenham [Apotek Records]

Jerome Sydenham [a] has to be one of the most underrated producers in the US electronic music scene.

Despite a number of standout cuts like ‘Sandcastles’ (which he produced with Dennis Ferrer), ‘Elephant’ (one of the biggest techno tracks of 2007, produced alongside Rune), ‘GSXR 810’ and ‘Son of Raw’ (another Ferrer collaboration) he is rarely given his dues in the press and blog world.

‘Judgement’ is yet another outstanding Sydenham groove that will probably shift hundreds of thousands of feet this summer thanks to its usefulness as a DJ tool, yet it’ll probably remain under the radar of most people.

In System Travel

Jamie Vex’d [Planet Mu]

Jamie Vex’d has had a busy year what with re-locating to Berlin, having his first child and embarking on his ambitious solo career, so it’s amazing that he’s still managing to lead the electronica and dubstep pack with his ingenuity in the studio.

This track, his first solo release since departing ways with Roly Porter is a science fiction, soul driven mind bender of a track with obscure beat patterns and deep vocal samples.

Two Of A Kind

Connect The Dots

Yotopia [Iboga Records]

Israel continues to churn out accomplished progressive house and trance producers at an impressive rate (there must be something in the water that stimulates dark melodies and hypnotism), and Yotopia [a] are the latest duo to offer a tasty album of darkly satisfying melodic club cuts.

The Tel Aviv-based duo’s new album ‘Connect The Dots’ blurs the lines between progressive house and trance with ease, and the LP flows with the kind of ease one would expect from a well planned DJ set.
