SAMC - on the hunt for new music

Whilst Beatportal’s Christen Reutens will be going to the South American Music Conference to analyse the health of the Latin American electronic music scene, I’ll be having a lot more fun listening to new music next week in Argentina.

Specifically, Beatportal wants to find hot new producers and labels from the continent that are doing something unique.

There is loads of excellent music coming out of South America on local labels such as Esperanza, Igloo-Rec, Off Side Recordings and Dual Musik.

Whilst the Internet has given minuscule labels the opportunity to have their tracks heard across the world, we do still think there’s a disproportionate amount of music being highlighted from Europe and America.

So our SAMC live blog will attempt to readdress this imbalance and hopefully we’ll find some glorious new music in the process.

Check out Esperanza’s quality techno in the player after the hop skip.

Morel grooves again

House don and groundbreaking producer George Morel opens his 2008 account with ‘Seduction’ on his self-run Miami-based Groove On label.

Echoing back to his innovative ‘Morel’s Groove’ EPs, this is another rhythm-smart cool, deep and highly seductive single made for late night sets and big room systems.

Skyle EP

Alex Cortex [Platzhirsch Schallplat...

Alex Cortex, aka producer Alexander Neumann, has been releasing cutting-edge electronic music for over a decade.

Neumann’s first EP was on Move D’s seminal Source Records, but this is the first time that one of his releases has really caught my ear.

Producer Interview: Wolfgang Gartner – Part 1

One of the most unique aspects of the club music world is the fact that many artists and producers routinely shed their skin and assume new identities as the seasons change.

It’s happened time and again, Eric Prydz uses several aliases, Deadmau5 has a few side projects like BSOD, Bodyrox includes Jon Pearn from Full Intention.

The list is virtually endless.

Wolfgang Gartner is an alias for a well-known house producer whose work has received both critical acclaim and mass appeal worldwide.

Split Pot EP

Fomat B [Opossum Recordings]

Format:B (aka Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand) have steadily honed their brand of brash, snappy techno with their work over the last year, appealing in equal measure to murky minimal lovers and post-electro party-heads alike.

And while this typically direct EP won’t win any awards for innovation, it’s the sort of punchy, upfront fare that’s guaranteed to rock the floor.

Big plans for Stealth Records

The release plans for Stealth Records are highly impressive with new singles earmarked by Roger Sanchez, electronica pioneers Prok & Fitch, Laidback Luke, Jesse Garcia and Funkerman.

First up is Miguel Picasso’s stripped and minimal sounding guitar strummer ‘Don’t Stop’ (with mixes from Alex Gomez and Noferini & DJ Nick) that is winning support from the likes of Tom Stephan, Hector Romero and the Trophy Twins.

Marco V cancels Syria gig after death threats

Beatportal has received some very worrying news: Dutch techno and trance DJ Marco V has canceled an upcoming gig planned for Damascus in Syria after he and his management received death threats.

“Obviously we get all kinds of comments on the boards, mostly positive, some not so good, but never anything like the death threats we received this week,” Marco V said, in a statement from his management.

“I am very upset that I won’t be able to make it; it would have been a first for me, and a first for Syria.

“At the end of the day we had to consider what’s happened and take what is sensible advice.

“Hopefully one day the situation in Syria will allow international DJs such as myself to come and play as we do in every other part of the world”.

Like No One

James T. Cotton [Spectral Sound]

Massively influenced by Chicago house and techno, ‘Like No One’ by James T. Cotton (aka US producer Tadd Mullinix) hardly re-invents the wheel.

Having said that, there are few producers making jacking Chicago-influenced house and techno to the same standard as Cotton.

London club review: Mulletover

Mulletover, the only east London club night with a type of hairstyle in its name, loves throwing parties in wacky locations.

Anybody who was around for their closing party in Ibiza last year will testify that the decision to hold a rave on the edge of a cliff next to an active lighthouse was an inspired, if ultimately flawed, idea (thanks Guardia Civil).

On this particular occasion a skanky Shoreditch car park is the venue of choice, which for the time being at least, appears to have become their spiritual home.

Brothers

Dr. Big Ass [Hit Beat Records]

Whilst the cavemen of the drum & bass world still moan about decreasing vinyl sales, we at Beatportal know that the digital download market has enabled a whole new range of producers to get their sound out into the open.

The beautifully-named Dr. Big Ass comes with an unashamedly brazen drum & bass record in the curiously-titled ‘Lwis’ that is designed for the party.

South America: Boom or Bust?

Next week [March 6th - 10th] the Beatportal team will be reporting live from the South American Music Conference (SAMC) in Argentina, one of the region’s biggest and most important dance music meetings.

There are questions we have about South America’s electronic music scene, many of which we hope will be answered by a trip to Buenos Aires where we’ll meet with some of the most important producers, DJs, promoters and record label owners.

The most pressing question is - Is the continued digitalisation of electronic music undermining the sustainability of the dance scene in a region where music piracy is rife?

Pioneers of electronic music #2: Steve Reich

Steve Reich (b. New York City, New York, 1936) is one of four universally recognised pioneers of the musical minimalist movement.

Developing in America from the mid-1960s, minimalism paved the way for a wide spectrum of musical activity, including house, techno and electro.

Enormously influential on a generation of musicians and producers, Reich’s beautifully repetitive compositions continue to sell CDs and concert tickets by the bucketload.
