Trentemoller talks of future plans

In today’s Herald Sun, Denmark’s Trentemøller is interviewed about an appearance he’s making in Australia as part of his band’s ongoing world tour.

In the article, he talks about the album, ‘The Last Resort’, as well as where he’d like to take his next album — with hopes of having Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star involved.

Trentemøller (full name Anders Trentemøller) also talks of his current live band set-up and finally settling on a remix for Moby.

In other Trentemøller news, the artist revealed in an interview with Beatportal that he has recently worked with fellow Dane and filmmaker Lars von Trier for soundtrack production.

Von Trier is known for several films, including ‘Dancer in the Dark’ starring Björk.

Given Trentemøller’s dramatic audio flair, the duo should create a stunning work.

More details on that development will be shared on Beatportal.

Beatport WMC pool party - who do you want to play?

Next March Beatport will be at Remix Hotel again during Miami’s annual Winter Music Conference.

For four days we’ll be hosting a pool party at the National Hotel with top international DJs and artists that we like.

But who do you like? Who would you like to see play at Beatport’s pool party?

We’re open to suggestions, so post your DJ requests below to let us know who floats your Miami banana boat.

Dean Coleman is ‘Starting Over’

‘Starting Over’ is the sort of record you instantly feel at home with, not least thanks to Dean Coleman’s stellar production work.

Minimal in the main, the Atlanta-based deck general is a master at knowing that less-is-more and the balance of deep ‘n’ dirty bass-inflected grooves with acid bleeps melds into a lethal combination.

The week in house music

As 2007 winds down and everyone prepares for the holiday festivities, some of our key labels unload their weapons and keep us grooving well into the New Year.

Steve Angello and Laidback Luke

Steve Angello and Laidback Luke can do no wrong.

Together they team up and combine classic keys with thick dirty beats on the instrumental mix of ‘Be’.

Minus goes direct to digital with USB

Minus, the label started by Richie Hawtin, releases ‘EXPANSION | contraction’ in the USB format — a first for the label.

Hawtin has been a longtime proponent of the digital format, with early involvement in the digital DJ platform Final Scratch, as well as with the digital online music store Beatport.

In addition to being released on USB in an extremely limited quantity of 30, ‘EXPANSION | contraction’ is also released in both CD and vinyl formats, although the USB contains two bonus cuts by Tractile and Ambivalent.

Full tracklisting details are disclosed after the jump.

At The Controls (M.A.N.D.Y.)

M.A.N.D.Y. [Resist Records]

M.A.N.D.Y always deliver strong hooks and memorable lead lines, so ‘At The Controls (Mix 1)’ is perhaps a slight departure for them in that, despite the song’s myriad of instrumental padding, it’s more about trippiness, the noise and the groove.

Containing a Reece bassline that rumbles in the low mids (the kind of tracks that use these basses usually blow up speaker stacks), it actually sits a tad awkwardly.

Smile And Receive

Swayzak [K7 Records]

Swayzak’s journey over the past 15 years has been an unpredictable one, as they released dubby, stripped back techno a decade before it became fashionable, flirted with electroclash, and then made the leap to connect songwriting flair with techno melancholia on their last album, the excellent ‘Loops from the Bergerie’.

Cosas De Taza

Sebastian Roya and Ynnad Zeugnimod...

Gran Canaria’s Sebastian Roya has released a couple of gems for labels like Connaiseur and Tapas Recordings, and here he pops up on one of the UK’s growing number of smart, minimally-inclined labels for this digital only release, flanked by the impossibly-named Ynnad Zeugnimod.

‘Cosas De Taza’ goes straight for the jugular, featuring a churning bottom end, snares cranked to maximum tautness, and an apocalyptic, thundering kick drum.

Black Box does it again with ‘Everybody Everybody’

It’s unlikely that anyone over 20 could not have noticed the revival of early-1990s dance classics currently doing the rounds.

Either sampled, covered, remixed or just plan re-released, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re back in a muddy field having spent hours driving around London’s M25 orbital trying to find the secret location for a rave… Ah, those hedonistic days!

Let’s Do It EP

Dave Hughes [Palette Recordings]

John Tejada’s ever-reliable Palette imprint has a stringent signing policy – for the last five years it’s only released tracks from Tejada, Justin Maxwell and Arian Leviste – so a new face on the block is inevitably greeted with high expectations.

Irish ex-pat Hughes doesn’t disappoint, notably on the title track, where tight micro-rattles roll across booming sub bass and a lushly unexpected Detroit coda.

Beatdown

Chuck Love [Om Records]

Minneapolis producer and OM roster member Chuck Love unleashes a pretty ghastly number here, although owing to a couple of decent remixes, the project is somewhat salvaged.

The Original suffers from a problem you would not usually associate with a producer with as many releases under his belt — the track is far, far too busy, almost to the point of annoyance.

Poppin’ Beats

Hatiras [Hatrax Records]

The legendary Hatiras comes across dirty on this latest Hatrax release.

Funky and brazen, ‘Poppin’ Beatz’ is tinged with nostalgia because it harks back to early noughties electro and commercial Ibiza anthems.

Is electronic music your life? Sign our petition

A front page article in Ibiza’s newspaper Diario de Ibiza recently reported on the new socialist government’s plan to ban after-hours clubs in Ibiza.

In the article, the leader of the government, Xico Tarres, is quoted as saying after-hours clubs “attract a lower quality of tourist and cause more problems than benefits.”

Had clubbers been from one particular nation or from one religion, Tarres’ comments could be considered racist.

Many clubbers and DJs see dance music as a way of life.

It is for some, like a religion.

It’s a personal lifestyle choice, just like Christianity or Islam.

It’s about time somebody made a stand for clubbers, so we’ve set up this online petition to try and get ‘Clubber’ recognized as an official faith.
