Nice & Nasty is an Irish label that has been going for over a decade and a half releasing vinyl, CDs and online MP3s/WAVs. According to label boss, Desy Balmer, Nice & Nasty is about ‘Real House Music and Proper Techno Music’ and the rest is nothing more than opinion and taste; however, popular opinion and other peoples perception Nice & Nasty would be a techno label, with a leaning toward the classic Detroit sound.

Nice & Nasty records was born at the end of 1993 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Nice & nasty was the brain child of DJ Desy Balmer, who was giggin around Belfast at the time, supporting The Prodigy on Irish tours and running the infamous Charlie Heggarty’s, Bangor.
Nice & Nasty is dedicated to quality electronic music, acid house, deep house, Detroit techno, Minimal techno and basically whatever tickles the fancy of Desy Balmer, who is head of A&R;. Nice & Nasty as a label and club promoter has also prided itself on new and exciting artwork working with Alan Oldham, Glenn Leyburn, Richard Seabroke and Gavin Faherty.
Originally conceived by Desy, the early days of Nice & Nasty involved promoter Billy Dunseath (High on Life / Planet Love) and DJs Robbie Nelson (Agnelli & Nelson) and Stephen Boyd (Thompsons’ Garage) with studio boffins Chris Agnew, Barry Wigham and a few others.
Nice & Nasty
, as a label, was pioneering in Irish dance music. Alongside Belfast’s Sugar Sweet (David Holmes & Iain McReady) and Dublin’s Red Records (Mark Kavanagh) they were the first Irish labels born of the rave scene as it were. Arguably, Nice & Nasty et al paved the way as an inspiration to other labels and then more recently as a hands-on guide, assistant, advisor if you will to a new generation of DJ/Producers going the DIY route setting up various labels like Static, Gobsmacked, Immunity and a few others. Nice & Nasty also has an off shoot, Dublin Xpress recordings.
The past is strong for nice & nasty with solid roots in the Irish scene and the occasional foray into the UK and European fixture list as key trax like Bolivian Angel (Ubiquity) and Marco Bernardi’s remix of The Beholder (Orlando Voorn) made it onto various other labels. As a promoter in the past Nice & Nasty has been privileged to work with Billy Nasty, Nick Warren, Fabrice Lig, Alex Smoke, Percy X aka Edit Select, Colin Dale, Layo & Bushwacka and many others.
The present is growing and growing with chart support, radio play and 5 star reviews from Santiago Salazar, Dave Clarke, Kris Needs, Richard Brophy, Paul Corey, Rob Warner, Sasha (De-bug), Mark E G, DJ 3000, Brodinski, Keli Hand and many more highlighting the talent and quality that Nice & Nasty purvey and also further recognition of the strength and maturity of the Irish scene.
The future is bright alright with new music from Manuel Perez, Lackluster, Nasty Bobby, Katsuhiko, Marco Bernardi (Octogen), Andrew Duke, Todd Nickolas (ADSR), Mark O’Sullivan (DK7) and Desy Balmer himself all in the pipeline. Before the end of 2010 Nice & Nasty will have reached vinyl No 15 and online No 100.
