Now in its sixth year, James Holden [a]‘s Border Community is firmly established as one of the foremost breeding grounds for fresh young electronic talent, having unearthed and gathered together a small army of free-spirited genre-benders who have injected new life into the European scene. A record label that has proved impossible to pigeonhole, Border Community wields a unique power to unite DJs and listeners from traditionally diverse scenes, with fans and admirers covering all bases from techno and electro, to house and trance, to ambient and electronica. With a vision best described as “danceable leftfield electronic music”, Border Community seeks to both bring more leftfield sounds onto the dancefloor and make dancefloor records which you can still listen to at home, with plenty of handy DJ tool treats for the world’s more creative DJs. “We’re interested in things that are a little bit outside the boxes that electronic music usually has to fit in,” explains standard bearer James Holden [a].

An outlet for Holden’s own in-demand productions as well as those of key artists Nathan Fake [a], Fairmont [a], Petter [a], Avus [a] and The MFA, a whole string of Border Community releases like Holden’s “A Break in the Clouds” and “Idiot”, Nathan Fake [a]‘s “Outhouse” and “The Sky Was Pink”, The MFA’s “The Difference It Makes”, Fairmont [a]‘s “Gazebo” and Petter [a]‘s “Some Polyphony” have surely now earned themselves a place in the techno classics annals. With the recent addition of new talents like Ricardo Tobar [a] and Luke Abbott [a], the Border Community family continues to grow, with plenty more fresh new dancefloor discoveries to come.

Having conquered the dancefloor and DJ boxes, in 2006 Border Community successfully branched out into the world of the artist album with the release of Nathan Fake [a]‘s striking “Drowning in a Sea of Love” debut. Garnering critical acclaim and across the board press coverage, label founder Holden’s own twisted debut “The Idiots are Winning” was soon to follow, before the release of 2007’s indie-techno gem “Coloured in Memory” from Fairmont [a] cemented a winning streak. Future album releases promise to continue this mission of blurring the boundaries between the bedroom and dancefloor.

“The label is all about putting out interesting music on the fringes of things,” explains founding father Holden. “When we started I wanted to remember what it’s like to go out and buy records: it is the idea of treating not only the artists with respect, but also the customers – which is why we include loads of tools and different versions. We want it to be more of a creative family than a commercial enterprise. There’s almost a sound coming up around the label, a sort of feeling, which is quite inspiring. I want to make Border Community a real success, and get it to the point where we can release music that is as unconventional as we like and still have it accepted.”

It’s on the fringes where the most interesting things happen…

“This label takes things right back to buying a 12” and involving you in something special. James Holden [a]‘s Border Community imprint is the leading light in forward-thinking house music.” - DJ Magazine

“On the verge of alternative / indie, this is one label with a unique vision where originality and strong ideas are always favoured. “ - Update

“Border Community is one of the best new labels I’ve heard these last few months. Soul and techno, dancefloor and sensitive, classic and innovative. BC is going to be a reference.” - Agoria [a]
