World’s first ‘mixable’ YouTube video: the future or gimmick?

Are remixable videos the future for electronic music? Designer Henrik Leichsenring demonstrates why interactive videos could become big in the DJ world, with this, the world’s first ever mixable YouTube video.

Remarkably Leichsenring, along with art director Sofia Gillström, have created a music video experiment on YouTube that allows users to ‘remix’ a video as it plays in real-time, using a jump-in timeline-fixed sample bank that’s embedded into the actual video.

You can play with it for yourself above (wait for the video to fully load).

Leichsenring explained how it all works. “There are 11 beats to mix from, and a wheel indicator at the bottom right of the video lets you know when it’s time to mix,” he said.

The track runs at 120 bpm, and the video features a man dancing with a rabbit mask. As you ‘remix’, the video also changes in synchronized fashion. The project is aptly titled ‘The Mixable Dancer’.

The controls are somewhat crude and dropping a mix on-beat isn’t easy, but overall, their video runs like a basic YouTube DVJing system.

DJs obviously won’t find much use for YouTube videos in their sets, but the general public might be enticed by its interactivity, and it may encourage more DJs to start exploring DVJing.
