World’s first ‘ecological club’ to open in London

World’s first ‘ecological club’ to open in London

While most of us these days do our bit to help the environment on a day-to-day basis, how many of us consider the environmental impact of our beloved nights out?

A new organization called Club4Climate have decided it’s time that clubbing went green, too, and are opening what they claim is the world’s first fully ecological night club at Surya, King’s Cross, London, on July 10th.

But have they got their priorities straight?

The venue promises to ‘create a green-print that others can follow’ by utilizing solar panels and wind turbines that will power not only the club itself, but also neighboring residential properties.

Club4Climate - represented by a figurehead who goes by the apt name of ‘Dr Earth’ - will be unveiling a ten point manifesto at the launch night,"for all club owners and promoters across the world to adopt and do their bit, however small, towards saving the planet.”

Admirable as the scheme may be, it appears that the organizers have spent less attention than they might have on one crucial aspect, however.

With less than two weeks to go before the launch, there haven’t been any details of DJs, music policy, or other such trifling matters announced.

Worthwhile cause or clueless gimmick?

Here’s the press blurb - read it and decide for yourself.

“Surya will put its stake in the ground as the first ever-ecological club on the planet, a flagship venture and a pioneer of ecological excellence.

* The club will have a unique dance-floor, combining materials such as quartz crystals, ceramics, cutting edge technology and the dancing motion of clubbers to generate part of the club’s energy requirements.

* A wind turbine and a solar energy system will make the club fully sustainable

* An advanced alternative energy system so effective that it will produce a surplus of electricity, which will be freely donated to the private residents closest to the building.

* The club will also be installing the latest air flush, waterless urinals, low flush toilets and automatic taps to ensure maximum water saving plus the latest innovations in ecological air conditioning units.

There is no greater universal language than music and clubland represents a truly diverse mix of people. Working against climate change is the responsibility of us all so why not make each small step count – even if it is on the dancefloor.”
