World Cup Beatdown: Martyn (Netherlands)
World Cup Beatdown: Martyn (Netherlands)
22 June, 2010 | 6.35PMTo celebrate this year’s World Cup, we’ve found the most football-obsessed DJs in electronic music and asked them to “represent” their home countries and share their predictions for this year’s championship.
Martyn
may not pay much mind to traditional borders and boundaries—the former junglist’s music spans dubstep, house, and techno, and he’s a Dutchman living in Washington, D.C. But he’s happy to wear Netherlands’ colours when World Cup rolls around.

Personal bias aside, who do you think will really emerge as champions this year?
There are so many good contenders: you have the classic tournament countries like Germany, Brazil, and Italy, and a bunch of highly talented squads with good balance of young and older players (Spain, Netherlands, Argentina, France, England). I think Messi’s Argentina will take it this year—he’s in his prime, and he’s got some amazing players surrounding him (Tevez, Mascherano, Veron, Higuain). Maradona as a coach may seem a little flakey but he definitely knows how to win when the world is watching.
And how well do you think your national team will perform and what players should we be watching out for?
I think Holland will do well, as always they have a massively talented squad. Sneijder is clearly one of the best players in the world right now. Contrary to other qualifiers, their run towards S-A has been very impressive, so let us hope that this means good things for the actual tournament. The well known Dutch problem, however, is a mental one: sometimes they tend to think that just because other teams don’t play as fancy as they do, they won’t have to get in there and win it, even if it looks ugly. If they keep their eyes on the prize and have a bit of luck they can get into the semis and maybe more!
What has been your favourite World Cup so far?
The first one I where consciously watched most of the games was 1986 in Mexico. I remember the heat, the shadow of some Aztec symbol on the pitch, and of course the England/Argentina game!
What would be your ideal track for your team’s World Cup Song this year?
I couldn’t explain to you why exactly, but Jan Driver’s ‘Rat Alert’ has something football about it, haha.. It’s got that sort of skillful overpowering last knockout feel to it—I’ll play that from the 80th ‘til the 90th minute if the Dutch make it to the final!
What songs would you pick for when your country wins and what song for when you lose?
Win: If it were up to me, it would be Joe Esposito, ‘You’re the Best Around’, hahaha, but I have the terrifying feeling it will be some Dutch apres ski anthem…
Lose: ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ by Eurythmics.
And finally, where will you be watching the tournament this year?
Most of it at home in the States, will have to catch the weekend matches in hotels on the road though!
