World Cup Beatdown: David Amo & Julio Navas (Spain)

To celebrate this year’s World Cup, we’ve found the most football-obsessed DJs in electronic music and asked them to “represent” their home countries and share their predictions for this year’s championship.

Quite a few folks are tipping Spain as likely champs this year, and Spain’s Julio Navas and David Amo—the heads of the progressive-leaning electro house label Fresco, as well as regular faces on Toolroom and Armada—are in agreement. Maybe that’s because Julio shares a surname with one of Spain’s players…

Personal bias aside, who do you think will really emerge as champions this year?

We really think that Spain is one of the strongest teams to win the championship—really good players and supporters, and a good feeling in the air.

How well do you think your national team will perform, and what players should we be watching out for?

We’ll work for sure! This is the year for Spain—you should be watching for Casillas, Valdés and Reina as goalkeepers, Puyol, Piqué and Ramos as defenders, the ball magicians Xavi and Iniesta, and the dangerous Villa, Torres, Pedro and… Navas (jejeje). Yes, there’s a football player called Navas.

What has been your favourite World Cup so far?

The one in Spain in ‘82 was so close to us. We were young and had time to follow football. We remember the orange called “Naranjito” as mascot.

What would be your ideal track for your team’s World Cup Song this year?

David Amo & Julio Navas, ‘1234’. It’s a really energetic and powerful track we think can push the team!

What songs would you pick for when your country wins and what song for when you lose?

If we win: ‘We Are the Champions’ or ‘Simply the Best’
If we lose: ‘Macarena’ (a super funny Spanish song)

Finally, where will you be watching the tournament this year?

We’ll be touring different countries. We’re used to followoing the games on the internet or in airports. If we are in Barcelona we’ll follow at home.
