Work / Odyssee I
2000 and One / Len Faki [Podium]
13 December, 2007 | 3.14PM- Section: Music Reviews
Podium boss Len Faki is planning to put out three installments of ‘Odyssee’ and then knock the series on the head.
While it is still unclear about his plans for the follow up releases, the first release makes it hard for them to raise the intensity stakes.
Similar to some of the drone-bass techno that was around at the end of the 1990s, a product of a fascination at the time with Kevin Saunderson’s Resse work — remember Funk D’Void’s ‘Diabla’? — but less epic and euphoric and more linear.
A growling, purring bass beefs up the rolling rhythms of ‘Odyssee I’ and inevitably, after some teasing, it finally climaxes.
On the other side, Dutch producer 2000 and One, who has made a big impression in the last two years, offers a more subtle arrangement, that looks to New York house for inspiration.
Teasing the listener with a nagging acid line that keeps on peaking, trailing off and then building again, it also houses a repetitive “work” vocal sample and a distinctly lo-fi jacking Chicago rhythm.
‘Work’, like ‘Odyssee I’, may be inspired by dance music’s roots, but the aim remains the same: to see you up on the podium.
