WMC Track: Jamie Jones ‘Summertime’
WMC Track: Jamie Jones ‘Summertime’
4 March, 2009 | 1.05PMNo Miami Winter Music Conference would be complete without a blissful sun-soaked vocal house record taking over the terraces.
Stardust stole the 1998 event with ‘Music Sounds Better With You’, Noze grabbed headlines last year with ‘You Have To Dance’ and Jamie Jones
might well do it this time around with the stunning unreleased single ‘Summertime’.
Jamie Jones has built up a strong name for himself through his low-slung minimal techno records that have appeared on Freak N Chic
, Bpitch Control
and Crosstown Rebels
, and his music is known for working well at intimate underground parties, and particularly at afterhours sessions.
But ‘Summertime’ represents a full break towards the mainstream and a maturing of sound that suggest Jones has plans, like his mentor and label boss Damian Lazarus
, to produce music that is more meaningful than the booty shaking grooves he has become so accomplished at.
The soulfully sweet vocal on ‘Summertime’ reeks of Chicago deep house, but the music contrastingly moves through waves of minor key chord changes giving off an overall vibe of melancholia.
It’s not overly uplifting and a lot more subtle than the happy-go-funky house anthems that have dominated the conference of the past, but in a cynical dance music world that likes to avoid cliché, and in the depths of a depression, the quiet optimism of ‘Summertime’ and its hints towards dystopia may speak to many attendees.
Jamie Jones ‘Summertime’ is due to be released 27th April.
