WMC Track: DKS ‘That’s Jazz’!’

Every year the arrival of WMC seems to be acknowledged by a thunderous downpour of cheap-for-kicks bootlegs, but amongst the mash-ups and scratch downs there are always a few that manage to bring something new to the famous originals that they’re based upon.

Sacrilege to Chicago house fans that were partying back in ‘93 this may be, but somehow DKS’ ‘That’s Jazz!’ (track no.8 in the player) manages to update Dajaé and Cajmere’s defining jazzy house record ‘U Got Me Up’ without completely ruining its legacy.

Whilst Dajaé and Cajmere’s original helped to kick start house music’s fascination for quirky samples from other genres (a movement that is currently being carried by legions of tech house and minimal techno producers), DKS’ effort adds enough oddball FX and scatalogical moments to be considered all on its own.

More stomping than the original, that famous trumpet riff is so roughly chopped and skewed together in a non-linear fashion that it brings an overall feeling of grittiness and texture.

The track evolves convolutedly, and the sample gets used and abused, reversed and stretched in a way that could only have happened in the digital era.

It’s unshamedly fun, and although there may be a few old skool Chicago heads plotting a witch hunt to burn DKS at the stake for house music blasphemy, they’ll be vastly outnumbered at WMC by smiling, knee-jigging clubbers who weren’t old enough to hear it the first time around.
