WMC interview: Josh Wink in Miami
WMC interview: Josh Wink in Miami
28 March, 2008 | 3.53PMBeatportal grabbed five minutes with house and techno producer Josh Wink
, to talk music.
Wink was kind enough to give us a copy of his hot new track ‘Stay Out All Night’ which many DJs have said is the tune of WMC 2008 so far.
He was even kind enough to let us share a preview of the track right here on Beatportal.
Meet Wink, and his ridiculously sexy track after the jump!
Steve Bug loves your new track ‘Stay Out All Night’, and we’ve heard other top DJs say it’s the tune of WMC 2008 so far. Care to share?
Check it out. It’s a weird combination of New York 1990s, Chicago beats and Wink production — and it sounds a little like St Germain.
Steve Bug really does love it, I gave it to him a few days ago and he’s played it during every set.
It’s a pretty sexy tech house track, and all the live instruments on it were played by yours truly.
Pete Tong said he likes it too, which is great.
Exclusive preview: Josh Wink ‘Stay Out All Night’
Why go down this particular route?
I’m just doing my thing. I’ve never done the minimal stuff. I just try to make music that’s a breath of fresh air.
So many producers these days are lazy. They all use the same presets and the same software.
While it’s great that anyone with a computer can make music these days, I’m disappointed by the lack of new sounds or ideas.
For this track, I dug out some old analogue gear — an MPC and a Doepfer MAQ16/3 MIDI Analog Sequencer.
I like using old gear because it keeps me tied to my roots.
I don’t forget who I am, you know?
Do you still mix down all your tracks live on a big outboard mixer?
I used to. I have a 32 channel mixer, but I don’t use all 32 channels these days.
Now I do a mixture of inboard mixing in the computer and a little bit of outboard.
I try to be as creative as I can about sound.
I feel passionate about the music, and even after 19 years of producing tracks, I still get a buzz.
So many people put out music just because they want it out, but I only put out music that I pushed myself on.
Do you get inspired by other artists’ music?
Yes, I do. I find the new music by Laurent Garnier to be really inspiring.
I was never a big fan of his older productions, but now his music is going to another level.
Dixon has just signed Laurent’s new single to Innervisions, and it’s a great record.
Shlomi Aber too is doing great music, too.
And a lot of the German producers and labels are going housey, which is cool because I’m a house guy at heart.
Your new album ‘When A Banana Was Just A Banana’ is due out in September. What was your intention behind such a strange album name?
You know, when I was a kid, music was just music.
You could be into new wave, punk, industrial whatever — it didn’t matter. Music was just music.
My album is a mixture of newer tracks, plus some unreleased stuff that has just been sitting there in my vaults.
I hope people just like it for what it is.
The Wink sound is a very particular sound. Have you got any studio tricks you could share with us?
I don’t do drugs or drink. But when I make music, I imagine what it feels like to be going crazy off your head on the dancefloor and I try to make music with that in mind.
I EQ stuff a lot, and work mistakes into the mix so it sounds raw.
I just want to make music that’s an interesting combination of sounds.
