Will Afrojack hijack WMC 2010?

Will Afrojack hijack WMC 2010?

Afrojack [a] aka Nick van de Wall’s rapid rise to the top of the electro house scene has been nothing short of spunky.

The 22-year-old began producing professionally just three years ago, and in that short space of time, he has gone from playing bars in Greece for a measly 200 Euros a week, to being one of The Netherlands’ hottest DJs and producers.

Like his fellow countryman DJ Chuckie, Afrojack’s ghetto-laced take on electro house has excited everyone within the mainroom house sphere, including David Guetta, who asked Afrojack to play at his F*** Me I’m Famous closing party at Pacha in Ibiza last summer, and Steve Angello, who has just released Afrojack’s new single ‘Pacha On Acid’ on his Size imprint.

The track was created by Afrojack specifically for his F*** Me I’m Famous closing set, and is apparently an ode to acid house, not a tribute to the hallucinogen (listen to it below).

More praise recently came in the form of an Essential New Tune on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show for the soon-to-be-released ‘Bangduck’. Afrojack has also just returned from an Australian Ministry Of Sound tour, alongside electro house’s diffident superstar Wolfgang Gartner [a].

And with a Madonna remix collaboration with David Guetta, and a remix of Benny Benassi’s perpetual electro anthem ‘Satisfaction’, Afrojack’s profile may mushroom into the stratosphere above Miami during the annual WMC at the end of this month.

Vocal-heavy bootlegs and electro house big hitters have a habit of dominating WMC’s beach parties and daytime events. Last year’s electro house bomb ‘Riverside’ by Sidney Samson for example, was impossible to escape from during WMC (Afrojack remixed that too).

This year will be the first time that Afrojack has attended the conference, and with a record box full of electro house crowd pleasers, it seems certain that the youngster will be snapping at the heels of the conference kings Steve Angello and Laidback Luke, who incidentally helped Afrojack early on in his production career with advice and tips through his online forum.

Five essential Afrojack tracks

Afrojack ‘Pacha On Acid’ [Size Records]

It may be simple, but there’s no denying that this is one of the dirtiest acid house DJ tunes in a long, long time.

Afrojack ‘In Your Face’ [Cloud 9 Dance]

Get your square bassline on! This is a rough and tough electro house speaker buster that Afrojack reworks through twisted filters.

Bobby Burns, Afrojack ‘Ghettoblaster’ [Spinnin Records]

Even hardcore house elitists will find it hard not to raise their hands in the air to Afrojack and Bobby Burns’ wobbly ‘Ghettoblaster’. It ain’t clever, but it sure is fun.

FM Audio ‘Killer’ (Afrojack Remix) [New State Music]

Essential new Dutch electro house shizzle, straight from the naughty streets of Amsterdam. And yep, that’s a Seal sample.

Afrojack, Benny Rodrigues ‘Dinges’ [White Noise]

A noisy-as-hell acid techno jam from Afrojack and fellow Dutch up and comer Benny Rodrigues. About as much fun as you can have with a single twisting synth line, and a drum loop.
