‘Wild Style’ honored and reissued

The Source magazine has crowned the classic ‘Wild Style’ the best hip-hop movie of all time, with its accompanying musical score rated by Vive as one of the 10 best movie soundtracks ever.

And to coincide with the 25th anniversary of this quintessential street movie, the soundtrack has been newly repacked, revamped and remastered by Mr. Bongo Records; as are the DVD, CD, LP, a new book and even tour.

For the uninitiated, it aptly captures the hip-hop scene at its birth in the South Bronx representing a slice of life from one of the most exciting periods in American culture, with emergence of new wave music, graffiti, and street dance.

Early proto-rap rhymes from Grand Wizard Theodore, the Cold Crush Brothers, Fab 5 Freddy, Double Trouble and Busy Bee & Rodney Cee featured here first and were since sampled by the likes of the Wiseguys, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Beck, Cypress Hill, DJ Shadow, Nas and Public Enemy, to name just a few.

As an added bonus, if you’re in the London any time until 2nd November, the PYMCA Gallery in Clerkenwell has an exhibition of back-in-the-day photographs from the era including original shots from the Wild Style movie along with images of DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Beastie Boys, the Bronx, and its infamous block parties and graffiti art circa 1978-83.
