Who is Nic Fanciulli in 2009?

The superstar DJ is dead. The superclub is defunct. The beat is still going.

Nic Fanciulli [a] lives in a post-superstar DJ world. He is part of a new generation of dance music jocks who have far more talent than they do luck.

Fanciulli represents the second wave of globetrotting DJs who unlike their predecessors, work hard, get paid modestly, and do almost everything themselves. They’ve learnt from the mistakes of those who’ve spun before them.

There is no sense of entitlement, there is no rampaging ego, there is only love and gratitude.

Nic Fanciulli first heard dance music calling at the age of 16. He worked in a record shop in his hometown of Maidstone, Kent, and after spinning at local bars got snapped up by the town’s house music bastion ClubClass.

Nic became a resident DJ of ClubClass aged just 20. That residency proved to be a turning point in his career. After playing alongside some of the biggest A-list DJs in the business including Deep Dish, John Digweed and Danny Tenaglia, Fanciulli was recognised for being “one of the best residents in the UK”, as Pete Tong put it.

October 2004 saw the launch of Nic’s Saved Records [l] imprint, which at first trumpeted up and coming British talent, and is now one of the most consistent underground house and techno labels in the UK.

In 2006, Fanciulli became a resident DJ of Ibiza’s legendary Space nightclub and played on the club’s infamous terrace every Sunday that summer. His partnership with James Zabiela [a] was next, and in 2007 under their One+One banner the duo toured the world. The tour was typically modest, and James and Nic covered North America in a car driven by their friend KOS (who is Nic’s warm up DJ for his tour this time around).

I first met Nic Fanciulli one Saturday night in 2006 at ClubClass, where he played alongside Pete Tong. Their sets were broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 as an Essential Mix. Nic was so nervous that he ended up knocking Tong’s FX unit onto the floor whilst the legendary DJ played, which killed the music in the middle of a live Essential Mix. Then later, after Nic had completed the first mix of his set, he accidentally pressed ‘stop’ on the wrong CDJ, again leading to complete silence. In the middle of a live Esssential Mix.

Nic obviously has progressed since then. Yet, despite his many years of experience behind the decks there is still so much he could do. Over the next four days I look forward to finding out who Nic Fanciulli is in 2009.
