Where Were U in 92?

Where Were U in 92?

Zomby [Werk Discs]

The sleeve notes to this album say it all: ‘Dedicated to 2BadMice, Shut Up & Dance, Lennie De Ice, Slipmatt...’, the list goes on, but you get the point: this is an homage to the early nineties rave movement in the UK.

With Zomby’s previous hits on Hyperdub [l] and Ramp [a] you might have been expecting a dark, chunky dubstep offering. Well don’t.

‘Where Were U in ’92?’ You may well have been listening to this record for what it’s worth, as this is everything modern day techno isn’t - brash, raw and without an ounce of subtlety.

There’s staggering 138bpm breakbeat, plenty of piano loops, and references to old skool hits such as ‘We are I.E.’, and the biblical ‘6 Million Ways to Die’, and overall this record is perhaps one of the most unique and fun listens of the year.

Whilst listening to this try not to don the white gloves, turn on the strobes and start searchin’ for your Rizzla on the dancefloor.

With each track coming in at around three minutes long, I’d recommend picking up the whole album for maximum rave effect.
