When We Were Young
Oliver Koletzki [Stil Vor Talent]
23 August, 2007 | 4.46PM- Section: Music Recommendations
Since exploding in 2005 with his monster single ‘Der Mückenschwarm’, new wave tech-houser Koletzki has rolled steadily forwards, gaining multiple accolades for his sharp, ultra-contemporary style while simultaneously nurturing his rather tasty Stil Vor Talent label.
His debut album, much like his slew of productions and remixes, is aimed firmly at the floor, but nevertheless with a varied scope that covers cyber-latin house (‘When We Were Young’), jittery minimal (‘Get Wasted’), and static micro-disco (‘Don’t Forget To Go Home’), alongside more standardized Euro-techno beats.
He clearly knows how to squeeze every last drop of dancefloor power out of his beats, with each and every track bristling with club-friendly drops and rushing, hand-raising breakdowns.
Alongside guys like Martin Eyerer, Toni Rios, Kiki and John Dählback, Koletzki’s smart but unpretentious approach to floor-rocking electronics may occasionally be a little brash for those with deeper sensitivities, but there’s little doubt that the fresh fun offered here will be dominating all sorts of dancefloors in the coming months.
Much like the act the album’s title describes, it’s all raucously enjoyable, even if you feel a bit grim afterwards.
