When Moby came to Berlin

When Moby came to Berlin

Sure, Moby [a] may live in a castle in the Hollywood hills, as recently revealed in an article in the New York Times‘ “Home & Garden” section. (Among other luxuries, a hidden room in the house once served as a tiki bar, complete with a fake crass ceiling.) But that doesn’t mean that he’s forgotten how to get down and dirty.

A few weeks back, Moby reached out to a crew of Berlin promoters, interested in playing a proper, underground rave. They not only hooked him up; they managed to put together an event of epic proportions, held in a former city bath in the neighborhood of Wedding, with a lineup including Fresh Meat, Jason Forrest, Kuedo, Lando Kal, Maxximus, Paul Spymania, Sam Barker, Shir Khan, Strobocop, and further DJs from crews like Leisure System and Greco-Roman.

The video above captures what the vibe of the night was like; the kind of thing that reminds you, hey—the underground really is alive and well.

Read on to check out a statement that the promoters sent out in their initial announcement; we think it bears repeating, simply for the way it captures a truly DIY, underground spirit—the kind of thing electronic dance music could use a lot more of, in our opinion.

“This party isn’t about Moby. Now, before you’ll all be like ‘This is an outrage! But he is the headliner!?’ and light the torches, let us explain. Sure, it is incredible, that Moby is in town and that he’ll party with us, just like we did in the old days (no month-long marketing campaigns and posters all over the city, just some ace dj’s and a sound-system). And we’re fucking excited to see him spinning some music outside the rave circus. But the night is all about music, not egos. It’s a dedication to the awesome subcultural diversity this city has to offer. It’s about all the crews and DJs and producers, famous and not-so-famous, who chose music to come first, who decided to follow their own creative vision and to leave their mark in the constantly changing bass continuum. This night is a statement, showing that the underground is still alive and vivid and that we can still pull off brilliant things, together. That we are going to create new spaces, even if they shut down the established ones and we’ll have to run around in panic, trying to find a safe spot for our sound-system. But at the end we will find one and our basslines will be heard… And above all: This night is about YOU, the ones who come and dance and drink and click the like buttons and buy the records and spread the word and make it possible.”—Berlincollective
