22 February, 2009 | 1.50PMMazi Namvar, label head of Fresh Meat
and pioneer of the new school Chicago house sound, suggested in a recent interview that the city’s bubbling talent was alive and well, percolating to the surface from the underground.
On a mission to further the cause, Fresh Meat has released a monster of an LP comprised of a Grade A cut of what’s been happening on the imprint lately.
‘When Bad People Cook Good Food’ is a compilation covering the first three years of the Chicago label, with a whole roster of top notch talent showing up to take a bow.
Eight of the songs in the release are exclusive, and alongside this album also comes a mix by Mazi under his Audio Soul Project
moniker.
Touting “some of the baddest characters around”, this releases finds Phonique
, Peace Division
, Worthy
and several others throwing down in a scrappy house extravaganza, resulting in some colorful bruises that make one no worse for the wear.
As is evident in this release, Fresh Meat dabbles in all corners of the ever-evolving house sound, and this album clearly showcases its diversity, with dark and dubby sounds seated comfortably next to their bombastic and loud-mouthed counterparts.
Several gems make up this roaring beast, but a few standouts are Phonique’s spooky rework of Badmouth ‘Anymore’; Chicago Wasted Youth’s bleepy banger ‘Meditate On The Soda’; and the dark horse ‘Mirari’ from Nathan Drew Larsen, which merges the classic and contemporary in a fat steamroller of a groove.
