What’s in the DJ’s box? Spencer Parker
13 March, 2009 | 8.51AMSpencer Parker is a DJ and producer very much on the ascendancy.
We could bang on about his appearances for Liebe Detail
, Buzzin Fly Records
and Tsuba
. Or the fact he’s signed to the highly respected UK imprint Rekids
and regularly plays out all over the globe. But what you should know first and foremost about Spencer, is he’s a genuine and likeable sort of fella from London, who endeavours to play cutting-edge house and techno of the highest order.
Oh, and he’s about to release a mix CD called ‘Rekids Revolution’.
Spencer allowed us to peek into his record box ahead of another busy weekend, in order to understand the influences behind the man.
Favorite set opener?
Spencer Parker ‘Untitled Head’ [Liebe Detail]

At the moment it’s an edit I did of my new track on Liebe Detail
of ‘Untitled Head’ with some crazy effects and the looped up acapella of Danton Eeprom
‘Grindhouse’.
I always try to play something a bit different as my first record, be it a new track I’ve made, something someone has just given me or a little edit I’ve recently done.
Secret weapon only you have a copy of?
Only me? Well, I guess that would be whatever I finished in the studio last week…
I’m definitely the only dude with that! Whether it’s any good or not is an entirely other matter… I’m lucky enough to get passed good records by friends like Radio Slave
, Nic Fanciulli
or Ben Watt
so I definitely support a lot of their fresh out of the studio tracks, too.
Trippiest record?
Radio Slave ‘Modena’ [Rekids]

I could listen to that track on loop forever!
I know Severino from Horse Meat Disco plays it a lot, too but it seemed to go under a lot of people’s radars even though it’s such a great track – seek it out!
Killer vocal track?
Greenskeepers ‘Keep It Down’ (Radio Slave’s Vocal Mix)

Don’t think it ever came out and I end nearly every set with it. The beats are super cool but I REALLY love the female vocal and the constant refrain of “I feel like love…”
Bassline weapon?
Boola ‘Resours’ [CDR]
Killer record from the Romanian boy.
I have the parts of ‘Body Language’ and the bassline of that is in the same key as ‘Resours’ so I often mix just the bassline of ‘Body Language’ over the top of ‘Resours’ and it kind of trips people out as they’re not sure which track is which.
The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?
Donna Summer ‘I Feel Love’ (Danny Howells re-edit) [White label]

I don’t care if you think it’s played out – I LOVE it!
And so does everybody else, whenever and wherever you play it!
Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?
Liberty City ‘If You Really Love Someone’ (Murk Groove Mix)

I love to play the Murk Groove mix of Liberty City “If You Really Love Somebody”.
It still sounds so current and has the awesome Murk production values.
I was a big fan of the Tribal label and there’s a few records on that label that you could easily dig out and still play now – ‘If You Really Love Somebody’ is definitely a favourite of mine though.
But props have to go to Marcel Dettman as he put me onto it!
Get out of jail card?
I never get IN jail to need em ;)
One more tune of the night finisher?
Lindstrom and Prins Thomas ‘Mighty Girl’ [Eskimo]

Lindstrom
and Prins Thomas
‘Mighty Girl’ is a great slow burn, feel good end of night record.
It starts really subdued but builds up into a huge crescendo of pianos and strings before bowing out gracefully at the end.
Much as I try to do myself after I’ve finished a set…
