What’s in the DJ’s box? Serge Santiago

What’s in the DJ’s box? Serge Santiago

If a pop star needs an italo disco remix, they call Britain’s Serge Santiago [a]. His Radio Slave partnership with Matt Edwards (which ended in 2002) resulted in reworks of Kylie Minogue, Fischerspooner and Tiga, and whilst Matt Edwards has gone on to become successful in the underground techno circles, Santiago has stuck firmly to his colourful edits and remixes, which includes Goldfrapp’s ‘Ride A White Horse’ and Hercules And Love Affair’s ‘Blind’.

In 2007, Santiago launched his own label Arcobaleno Records [l] with the label’s biggest hit, the groundbreaking disco-flavoured tech house cut ‘Atto D’Amore’, coming from Serge himself.

This summer Serge Santiago will be continuing his We Love residency at Space in Ibiza, but before that he has a special rooftop party on May 15th planned with Greg Wilson and Guy Williams at a famous London landmark.

Mr. Santiago granted us access to his record box which runs very, very deep, and in it we found obscure disco cuts and long-forgotten classics.

Favorite set opener?

Snatch ‘Another Brick in the Wall’

It doesn’t matter what planet you’re from, you can’t not dance to this mother!

Snatch ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ on the label Millennium in 1980 is a cover of the Pink Floyd classic but with more funk that a game of ‘Who’s got the funk?’ It’s like a go fuck yourself to the last DJ!

Secret weapon only you have a copy of?

Retro Grade ‘Moda’

Everyone wants it but only I have it as Tom Neville and I made it.

I don’t think I’ve ever had so many DJs ask me for a copy of a track I’ve made, or so many people ask me what it is when I play it: it’s big!

Trippiest record?

OZO ‘Bells of Anambra’

Made in 1976, this sends you on a little journey to somewhere else.

Great for an end of night clearout if you know what I mean?

Killer vocal track?

Mr White, Larry Heard ‘The Sun Can’t Compare’

I still listen to this now, sad but brilliant piece of music.

Bassline weapon?

Zapp ‘More Bounce to the Ounce’

This at TOP volume is basically fatter than almost anything else with a bassline, simples!

The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

Moton Records ‘U Y Fall’

I’ve really got to playing this track as I play it every time, maybe I won’t, aarrgh.. fuck it!

Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?

Patrick Cowley ‘Mind Warp’

Holy mother of god this is a great record.. doesn’t need editing for modern ears. Its perfect!

Get out of jail card?

Retro Grade ‘Pulsar’ (Woosh Version)

It’s a pulse that builds and builds and builds then goes bang! Coming soon!

One more tune of the night finisher?

Mel & Kim ‘Showing Out’ (Serge Santiago Edit)

It’s fun and not techno or minimal, good bye!
