What’s in the DJ’s box? Robert Dietz
27 February, 2009 | 12.02PMWe recently named Frankfurt’s Robert Dietz
as one of our ‘Artists to Watch’ in 2009, as he seemingly came out of nowhere to land on some of the scene’s hottest labels including Cecille
, be chosen
and Deep Vibes
in the latter half of 2008.
A proponent of the eternal clubbing maxim ‘house is a feeling’, Dietz seemed to arrive on the scene fully formed, showcasing his firm understanding of aesthetics through his chunky loop-based deep house/tech house tracks.
We decided to corner Robert Dietz and peek into his record box. Unsurprisingly, we found tracks from the deepest corners of the house camp, and several secret treasures.
Favorite set opener?

Craig Alexander ‘Soul Revival’ [Millions of Moments]
Normally I don’t really have a favorite set opener, I usually prefer stripped down tracks to build up the whole thing.
But at the moment I prefer this track because of its warm chords and a bad ass deep bassline that’s hypnotic with soulful vocals on top.
“Get your tickets for the soul revival!”
Secret weapon only you have a copy of?

DJ Assassin ‘A Face Amongst A Crowd’ [Cross Section Records]
This is one of my favorite records, both mixes are absolutely awesome.
The main mix is deeper with a harmonic melody and beautiful guitar strings but the Intellidred mix has this strange, insane bassline and synthy chords that make people go totally wild, topped with the adorable and sweet vocals as well.
“You know that you got me, baby!”
Trippiest record?

Boards Of Canada ‘In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country’ [Warp Records]
This isn’t a record I usually play in my sets, but you can get totally lost in these charming tracks like, ‘Amo Bishop Roden’ which is full of emotions.

Round Two ‘New Day’ [Main Street]
Mark Ernestus & Moritz Von Oswald
made this amazing classic. One of the most beautiful house tracks ever. Every time I play that record you can see something really special happening on the dancefloor.
“The love that we had was so strong…”
Bassline weapon?

Reboot ‘Vandong’ [Below]
In my opinion Frank Heinrich aka Reboot
is one of the best producers at the moment.
This track has this breathtaking bassline and it’s not a friend of clubs with weak sound systems. Boom!
The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

Unknown Artist ‘Roxy EP’ [White label]
This mysterious record has no credits, no label. Just a bootleg from 2002.
The Dub version is such a driving hypnotic bassline monster that people are always getting totally addicted to it. But I don’t play it every time. It’s a delicate record that only should be thrown out at a very special moment.
Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?

Blake Baxter ‘Our Luv’ [DiskoB]
‘Our Luv’ contains samples from Donna Summer’s original ‘Our Love’, and it’s a special record that I love to play in the morning hours.
Get out of jail card?

Cajmere ‘I Need You’ (Hugo Moya Remix) [Cajual]
A catchy house bomb that has always worked quite well on the dancefloor. This is how I make them scream and sweat.
One more tune of the night finisher?

Unknown Artist ‘Lemony’ [Einfach]
A bootleg from one of the Frankfurt-based newcomers that contains samples from Nina Simone’s ‘See-Line Woman’ with a mind-blowing bassline and wicked percussion.
This is the perfect track to send the people home smiling.
