What’s in the DJ’s box? Olivier Giacomotto
13 February, 2009 | 8.14AMWe figured it was high time to take a sneak peek inside the DJ box of Olivier Giacomotto
, currently one of the hottest electro house DJs on the circuit.
With a discography that dates back over ten years and chart smashing collaborations with John Acquaviva
on his Definitive Recordings
imprint, Giacomotto further established his name last year when he received a nomination for Best Electro House Artist in the 2008 BMAs. He has ridden that success into 2009, with his recent ‘Guacamoli / Locomotto’ double tracker storming dancefloors worldwide.
We sat down with the Frenchman and his record box, and asked him all sorts of important DJ questions.
Favorite set opener?
Hatiras ‘Green Frisbees’ [Hartrax Records]

In this track, there is this huge first break growing and growing, with filters and white noise; it really teases people and then, all of a sudden - bang! The track really kicks in with this massive bassline.
It just has a straight, great effect on the crowd and I simply love it.
Secret weapon only you have a copy of?
It depends, sometimes it can be a track that I just made that when I play gets a great response from the crowd; then it becomes a secret weapon for the next few weeks.
Or it can be an unreleased track that a friend of mine sent to me as a super private promo.....
I’m always in contact with some great producers in Toronto like Hatiras
, Adam K
; or in Spain, with David Amo
and Julio Navas
, and it’s always a pleasure to play their tracks exclusively.
Trippiest record?
Gregor Tresher ‘A Thousand Nights’ [Great Stuff]

This record is magic. It’s become a classic and represents Gregor at his best.
It’s a real journey into the sound - the melody is very catchy and people love to hear that track on the dancefloor where they can share a special moment of emotion.
Killer vocal track?
Adam K ‘You’re Not Alone (Amo & Navas remix)’
Even though I’m not a big fan of vocal tracks, I’ve played this song for more than a month now, and I have to admit that the vocals are killer.
After a minute and a half this female vocal comes in and gives a truly magical feeling to the mix, and then David and Julio made this super catchy beat which drives people back to the reality of the dancefloor.... simple and efficient!
Bassline weapon?
Jason Mac Layne ‘Memory Loss’ [Bonzai Basics]

Sometimes I discover those new producers who make a really great track… this one is growing step by step, layering bass and synths, more and more… it’s like pinning someone to the floor and not letting them move—people just freak out when they listen to this bomb.
The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

This is the track that made me discover electronic music.
The way that the delay is used on the snares is just unique. If this track could speak it would command you to dance!
Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?
I’ve forgotten, too! Music is sometimes like history, only the most important moments stay as memories.
I also tend to have my feet, eyes and ears oriented to the future.
Get out of jail card?
Richard Kegg, Tim Healey ‘Turn Me On’ [InStereo Recordings]

This track makes everyone perk up.
It’s a brilliant crossover track, it’s techno, there is a very nice vocal saying “turn me on”, but it also has this huge electro house bassline… so if sometimes the dj feels lost, remember that this track can get him back into the game.
One more tune of the night finisher?
Olivier Giacomotto and DJ Tonio ‘Eat What You Kill (Kiko remix)’

It’s a teaser, it’s intense, it keeps growing and building.... I remember playing it at Sankey’s Soap in Manchester; you can see on the video from that night that everybody is screaming with their hands up in the air....
I went back there two weeks ago and recorded another video, and the crowd was even more into it.... Sankeys, I love you!
