What’s In the DJ’s box: Motorcitysoul
26 September, 2008 | 7.31AMEach week we take a peek inside the record boxes of our favorite DJs.
This time it’s the turn of Frankfurt house stalwarts Matthias Vogt and Christian Rindermann.
House music might be alight with talk of all the great new labels and producers coming out of the Frankfurt/Mannheim scene.
The success of producers like Johnny D and record labels like Oslo has been one of the defining trends of 2008.
But for Frankfurt veterans, Motorcitysoul
, thumping out classy deep house gems like their best known track ‘Keep On Turning’ is just business as usual.
As Motorcitysoul Matthias Vogt and Christian Rindermann (aka C-Rock) have been releasing records together since 2004.
This autumn the pair will drop their debut album ‘Technique’ on Simple Records
.
Much like their DJ sets its rich in vocals and sultry house grooves and is a long overdue long player contribution to their already impressive discography.
A perfect excuse then to see what records do the damage when they play out.
Favorite set opener?
Matthias: It used to be ‘Berlin’ by Shur-I-Kan
on Physical Graffiti
.
I’ve played it as my opener for about a year now but I’m looking for a new one for our new tour.
C-Rock: Moodymann ‘The Day We Lost Soul’ (KDJ).
Daniel Stefanik played it as an opener last year at secretsundaze and it put a smile back into my old and bitter face.
Secret weapon that only you have a copy of?
C-Rock: It’s probably a very limited bootleg of ‘Geboren’ by the Fantastische Vier.
Compost tried to release it a couple of years ago but never got an answer from their management.
Big fish, little fish…
Matthias: Well that’s a secret of course!
Trippiest record?
C-Rock: ‘The Day We Lost Soul’ (KDJ)Renato Figoli ’Ocho Al Puma’ on Gumption Records.
And yes, Renato, that bastard, he needs to get back to the scene.
An amazing guy, good friend and a lovely person.
He is about to release a digi-only-album of his unreleased tracks but until today ‘Ocho Al Puma’ is still his masterpiece.
Shouts to Sardegna!
Killer vocal track?
Matthias: An all time favorite is surely ‘Promised Land’ by Joe Smooth.
We love vocal tracks and did some tracks other people would maybe call killer tracks, like ‘Keep On Turning’, ‘Written In The Stars’ or ‘Change You’.
My jazz project [re:jazz] also has some really nice vocal stuff, like ‘Gabrielle,’ sung by Alice Russel, or ‘The Brightness Of These Days’ from the new album ‘Nipponized’.
Bassline weapon
Basil Hardhaus ‘Hardhaus 2’ (Hard For the DJ) (Nu Groove Records) - no comment
The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?
Matthias: Before I leave my home to play I wonder which classics to take with me.
It changes all the time though so usually no one record says in my box for longer than a year.
Kraftwerk ‘Numbers’, maybe?
Although actually I haven’t brought that out for awhile but it was in there for a long time.
C-Rock: The one that’s in the box forever and always will be is of course the almighty, legendary, unbeatable and unstoppable M5 by Maurizio / Basic Channel.
It’s the heartbeat of house music!
The track you always get asked to play that you don’t mind playing?
C-Rock: ‘Keep On Turning’ by our Chez Damier Joint ‘Kids In the Streets’.
Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?
Matthias: The Beloved ’The Sun Rising’ (WEA)
C-Rock: Sven Väth ‘Step By Step (Dub)’ (Clever)
Get out of jail card?
C-Rock: That changes from place to place and time to time but for the last couple of months it was ’House Nation’ by the House Master Boyz
(Dance Mania).
The ‘86 version of ‘Moscow Discow’ by Telex (Telex) is also always a good joker to surprise, escape, save and win the night!

Your ‘one more tune’ end of night finisher?
Matthias: The other night at Yello, in Belfast, C-Rock played Madness, ‘It Must Be Love’.
Everybody sang along, it was just amazing!
C-Rock: The Smiths ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ (Sire) I could tell you a bunch of stories, my first love stuff, trips to the UK, early live concert experiences, the first joint, first sex and all that bullshit but to be honest, it’s simply a great song, maybe even one of the best ones ever made.
I keep the personal background stories for myself but feel free to ask me face to face next time I play it!
