What’s in the DJ’s box? Mat Playford

What’s in the DJ’s box? Mat Playford

With a start that began years ago in his mother’s studio, stopping the tape for her aerobics classes at the ripe old age of five, Mat Playford got his official initiation into the world of music at Leeds College of Music where, by the time of his graduation, he had already been asked to lecture.

Academia of that sort wasn’t in the cards, however, and instead he got swooped off to Brooklyn for a real life graduate program where he met US house producers Sandy Rivera [a] and Angel Moraes [a].

Eventually, a collaboration with acid house don Paul Woolford [a] materialized, and Arista Records came knocking.

To date, he’s opened for acts ranging from Masters At Work [a] to Nic Fanciulli [a] at venues like The End and Ministry of Sound, and has a production style that mirrors his New York deep house influences as well as informed by current European trends.

Beatportal took a look inside his record box and discovered the jewels that are making magic for him on his dancefloors.

Favorite set opener?

Salt City Orchestra ‘The Book’ (Mat Playford Remix) [Paper Recordings]

This is an old favorite of mine that I remixed ... one for the heads.

I was very lucky to get a go on this track and it was supported by loads of DJs and even played six times in one night in Space Ibiza!

Secret weapon only you have a copy of?

Angel Moraes and Mat Playford ‘Heaven Scent’ [Hot n Spicy] 1996

This was one of the first records I made… a very very long time ago.

It was one of those turning points of creativity! I haven’t looked back since.

Trippiest record

Vibe Corner ‘Long Time Gone’ (Km5 mix) [Architech]

I found this trippy not because of its musical content but because so many people got it when I didn’t think people would.

It’s a kind of Mr. Fingers-styled chords so it’s very very laid back. Was pleasantly surprised that people like it!

Killer vocal track

Weirdo Police ‘Cant Reach Your Love’ [Weirdo Records]

A future release with a lot of heart! Sung by Danielle Moore of the band Crazy P.

I hold this one close to my heart as there is personal meaning to the song.

Bassline weapon?

Mat Playford ‘Analogue Tear’ [Intimacy]

The Korg ms10 keyboard was used on this record and it shows up all those nano synths that are oh so popular.

I made it to celebrate the 30th year of the ms10.. very angry track!

The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

Giorgio Moroder ‘The Chase’ [Casablanca Records]

A record that inspired me to do what I do. Its crazy to think that a record that old is still holding its own in night clubs.

Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?

Kings of Tomorrow ‘Sessions’ [Blackwiz]

Just a great deep track I can remember being really excited about it and to my surprise six months later I was in the studio with Mr. K.O.T!

Get out of jail card?

Josh One ‘Contemplation’ King Britt Mix (Mat Playford Edit) [Social Problem]

A record that always gets the reaction (even in London). Just a classic record, plus a real favorite with the ladies!

One more tune of the night finisher?

Tim Deluxe ‘Mud Pod’ [Skint Records]

This one has the wonkiest bassline.  A true house record that pinches on techno. Cant get over the energy of this one.

One of the Space residents begged me for this track, so I told him he had to play it twice and give back to me on Monday…

And he actually did!  Tim Deluxe is one of the most underrated producers out there at the moment. The guys a genius and this is the proof!
