What’s in the DJ’s box: Dirt Crew
29 August, 2008 | 12.51PMEach week we hunch over the DJ booth to peek at the set lists of our favourite DJs.
This week one of Berlin’s most revered duos reveal the weapons that rock their dancefloors.
Whether it’s at their residency at Berlin’s Weekend club or on one of their many gigs around Europe, Dirt Crew are not ones to shy away from a party.
As DJs they’re known for capturing the mood on the dancefloor, a skill that comes from being in tune with the people in front of them by actually getting amongst them.
It’s this vibrancy and party spirit that’s quickly apparent on their new mix CD ‘Collection 2.’
The mix, a continuous mix of new and old tracks from their labels, is another entry in their impressive discography.
Before electro house became more known for the saw toothed basslines of DJs like Fedde Le Grand, it was defined by genre molding singles like Dirt Crew’s 2004 track ‘Rok Da House.’
Their remix of Sasse’s ‘Errore Di Sistema’ (Sci + Tec).
We got this one some weeks ago as a promo and have been playing it in almost every set as our first record.
It’s a mix of house and techno and has this minimal rhythm that makes the crowds go crazy.
Secret weapon that only you have a copy of?
It’s Tigerskin’s next mega smasher that will be released in September on our new CD label compilation.
The track is called ‘From The Depths’ and is pure ecstatic techno with a nice dubby feel to it.
It always works and the people always scream for it.
Trippiest record?
Martin Brothers ‘Dum’ (Dirty Bird) is one of those records that teases the dancefloor.
It’s a pure crossover thing and just a mad crazy track.
It’s sometimes hard to get into for some people but in the end everybody loves it.
Killer vocal track?
Johnny D ‘Soleil (Delete’s Vocal remix)’ this one is all about the vocal and it’s a true classic!
One of those rare records everybody likes, girls and boys.
It’s the real old skool feeling of house music that a lot of productions nowadays lack.
I wish there were more tracks like this one around.
Bassline weapon?
It has to be Delete ‘Flight Schedule (Gregor Tresher remix)’.
The track starts building really slowly, building up the tension and after two minutes that awesome bassline kicks in and the roof explodes!
It’s always a winner.
The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?
Okay, this sounds obvious but yes it is ‘Homework’ by Daft Punk.
It is the best dance album ever made and still ahead of everybody else nowadays.
Whenever we play a really awesome party and get really drunk I drop one of the tracks from ‘Homework.’
The track you always get asked to play that you don’t mind playing?
Our biggest hit: Sasse ‘Soul Sounds (Dirt Crew Solid Diamond remix).’
It’s still the record people most know Dirt Crew for and they still love it.
We can’t get enough of it too and it still gives me goosebumps.
Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?
Now and than we play ‘Positive Education’ by Slam and it is always a very refreshing moment in a club to hear this record.
Its sound is so much rougher than current productions and takes the crowd back to the good old times.
Also Laurent Garnier’s ‘Wake Up’ is a true secret weapon.
Your “one more tune” end of night finisher?
That’s the beautiful: Jamie Lloyd ‘May I (Quarion Remix)’.
This record is a Balearic masterpiece and brings the crowd back home in a good way.
A perfect end of the night track, good feelings all the way and the best track Quarion has made.
