What’s in the DJ’s box? Adultnapper

Brooklyn’s Francis Harris, better known as his Adultnapper [a] alter-ego, has been bestowing his underground minimal house beneficence upon dancefloors since 2004 and this week we get to peer into the depths of his magical DJ box.

With punk rock roots and an initial distaste for dance music, this philosophy PhD dropout began his DJ and production career as a seemingly unwilling participant

Yet and still, he was pulled in to the dance music maelstrom, and in a reaction to the sounds that were dominant when he began dabbling, Harris developed a melody-rich and intricate style characterized by complex arrangements and deep atmospherics.

It wasn’t long before the industry’s luminaries took notice, and now Adultnapper tracks can be found on some of the most illustrious labels in the biz, including Steve Bug’s Audiomatique, Dirt Crew [l], and his own Ransom Note [l], which was created as a vehicle through which to explore the darker regions of the Adultnapper persona, with each release playing a role in a complex and chronological saga.

You can also find this dark and brooding character spinning his melodic tales on dancefloors like DC10’s Circo Loco, Avalon and Cielo.

Favorite set opener?

Tony Watson ‘Passages’ [Idaban]

Well, if I am starting out the night. I would have to say “Passages” by Tony Watson on Ibadan.

Secret weapon only you have a copy of?

Jay Tripwire ‘Who Watches the Watchman’ (Touane Remix) [Ransom Note]

Upcoming record on my imprint. Remix is just mindblowing.

Touane is probably the best producer around in my book.

Trippiest record?

Touane featuring Signor Andreoni ‘That’s Some Shit’ [Minisketch]

Yet another Touane tune.

Total complete mind fuck. Don’t know how he does it.  The complexity in the music is just leagues ahead of most of the happy accidents being released these days.

Killer vocal track?

Dop ‘Romeo feat. Noze’ [Circus Company]

One of the best house records I’ve heard in a while.

Such a hypnotic groove with vocals weird enough to make it into my box.

Bassline weapon?

Peace Division ‘Voodoo (It’s In The Wall)’ [Crosstown Rebels]

Monster bass here with a definite dark edge.

On the proper rig, it just fills the room and takes things a bit weirder.

The record that will never leave your box as long as you live?

M.A.N.D.Y and Sunset People ‘Sunset People (M.A.N.D.Y.’s latenightflight to monza mix)’ [Get Physical]

The best Get Physical tune to date in my estimation and it’s the inside B cut!! This tune always brings the floor together and has very special feeling.

Oldie that everyone else has probably forgotten?

Terry Francis ‘Strong Woman’ [Pagan]

This is a record you can listen to 20 years from now and it would still be relevant.

Pulled it out of the crates recently and been hitting it at some afterhours sets. Unbelievable groove.

Get out of jail card?

Guillame & the Coutu Dumonts ‘They Only Come Out at Night’ [Musique Risquee]

Probably one of my favorite tunes of recent memory. Rough and ready tech house with incredible intensity.

It’s a sure fire way to set the room off and the groove is relentless.

One more tune of the night finisher?

Chymera ‘Planetarium’ [Ork]

I know that the one more tune of the night is usually reserved for classics, but I haven’t been around that long.

If you want a classic in my book, it would probably not end up being a dance track, so I tend to stick to tunes I just love to hear and this is definitely one of them. A gorgeous piece of work.
