What’s in Seuil’s DJ box?
14 July, 2010 | 1.34AMSeuil’s album ‘Costes Presente…Chamaeleonidae Par Seuil’ is freshly out on the Welcome to Masomenos label; it’s a moody take on house music whose minimalism is balanced by rich, electro-acoustic textures. Finishing the LP clearly didn’t impede Seuil’s prolific flow of releases: so far this year he’s put out tracks on Nervmusic, Serialism Records
, Tretmeuhle, Watergate Records, and Eklo Tools, a subdivision of his own Eklo
label.
Like his own productions, Seuil’s DJ sets emphasize the deeper, more supple side of classic house and techno, equally influenced by Perlon and Strictly Rhythm. Check out what’s in his box after the jump, including goodies from Bobby Konders and Wolf+Lamb.
Favorite set opener
Ben Nevile, ‘Van’ [Telegraph]. I have had this record for a while, and if I had to choose one, this record would be perfect to build a vibe around, with mysterious electric pianos and deep grooves. Even if it’s a 129 BPM track, just slow it down a little bit. Another one would be ‘Théogénèse’ from Villalobos on his ‘Alcachofa’ album.
Trippiest record
Pantytec, ‘PonySlaystation’ [Perlon]. I’m not saying that this is the trippiest music I know, but this is the album which makes me “trip” the most, I would say, it’s an important piece of music in my life.
Bassline weapon
Bobby Konders, ‘Version’ [Nu Groove]. Old record on Nu Groove with a super fat 909 beat added to monster bass and those signal strings moving around. Classic.
Killer vocal track
Nicolas Jaar, ‘Time For Us’ [Wolf+Lamb]. This track really blew my mind, it’s a masterpiece! This is my killer vocal track at the moment! Obviously I think it will be for a while.
Oldie that everyone else has forgotten
Audio Clash, ‘Live and Die’ [Strictly Rhythm]. “Everyone else” except perhaps people like Dan Ghenacia from Freak ‘n Chic who recently played it in Panorama Bar; a track for special times—amazing.
Closing track for those “one more tune” encores
Soul Clap
, ‘Extravaganza’ [Wolf+Lamb]. It really catches me, and I usually get huge responses from the crowd.
Record with a great intro/outro, when you want to change tempo/mood
dOP, ‘I’m Just a Man (Tolga Fidan Remix)’ [EKLO]. This remix from my friend Tolga is an epic piece of music of more than 14 minutes where a straight kick appears at 4 minutes in… special timing.
Record outside your usual tempo range
Burial, ‘Untrue’ [Hyperdub]. The whole LP is crazy in its ambiance and its raw sound. Strong melancholy with an impression of abyssal immensity, and living sounds. It turns around 140-150 BPM, breaking out from my usual “DJ tempo”.
Guilty pleasure
Tan-Ru, ‘Body Move’ [Trelik] or Mathew Jonson, ‘She Is He’ [Itiswhatitis].
Two records that you always play together
Simitli, ‘Gee Baby (Ain’t I Good to You)’ [MFF] and Soul Capsule, ‘Lady Science (Tek Mix)’ [Trelik].
The record that will never leave your box
Ricardo Villalobos, ‘Alcachofa’ LP [Playhouse]. This record changed my vision of electronic music, and influenced me in loads of ways…
